That’s why we developed a community currency called the Current—a means to share each business or individual’s skills and resources within the community. The purpose of the local currency is to contribute to a more sustainable society by supporting economic and social justice, the environment, community participation and human aspirations through development and management of a local currency syst
em that promotes economic strength and community self reliance, builds community pride and provides benefits for local business and citizens; and to establish programs supportive of that endeavor including bringing information to the public about local currency and sustainable society; and to offer charitable assistance to organizations and individuals. A volunteer group of community organizers has worked for over three years on the launch of a community credit network. Work has progressed in several directions: researching the history and practice of existing alternative currencies to develop the model on which the Current is based; research and implementation of software; and raising awareness of the project through public education and promotional events, David McCarthy's monthly “New Economics” column in Country Wisdom News, and through advertising and marketing the project. Creating a local currency is entirely legal—there are alternative currencies springing up all over the United States and the world. Members exchange the Current on a secure website; one Current (~) equals one Dollar ($). How your business utilizes Currents is entirely up to you—you can employ a variety of terms such as Current-Dollar splits, time frames, or specific goods or services that you will sell for Currents. The Hudson Valley Current is an antidote to an entrenched system that keeps local businesses at a disadvantage and drains money from the local economy. Using the Current will improve our community by encouraging interdependent networks of local businesses and community members. The Current is a nonprofit project, funded primarily by small fees for membership transactions.
