URI’s Center for the Humanities was established by Faculty Senate legislation in 1994 and is designed to foster intellectual exchange and independent inquiry, analysis, and interpretation of the humanities in research, teaching, and learning. Its activities include a speaker series, research grants, and fellowships for faculty and graduate students. We are excited to announce the return of our monthly Brown Bag talk series, held on Tuesdays at 12:30pm in the Galanti Lounge of Carothers Library and over Zoom.

The Brown Bag Series features faculty and graduate students sharing their research, teaching, public humanities, or digital humanities projects. This fall we have three speakers from history, modern and classical languages and literatures, and English.

We are excited to announce our 2026-27 yearlong humanities speaker series, American Revolutions.

With the U.S. turning 250 years old, the series will feature seven events that reflect on the meaning of the American Revolution, then and now. In the fall, we will have four events on the Revolutionary War itself; and in the spring, we will present three talks on the Revolution's legacy, in Latin America, the Caribbean, and on the Civil War. Our first event in September will feature Rob Parkinson from Binghamton University discussing the Declaration of Independence.

Save the Date! Award winning cartoonist and graphic memoirist Alison Bechdel will give a talk on Friday, October 9th at 5pm in Edwards Hall.

This event is organized by GWS, GSC, CFH, English, and Wanderground Le***an Archive & Library, as well as funded by the New England Humanities Consortium through the Community Collaborative grant program.

The Redwood Library and Athenæum will host the lecture and book signing, 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘥: 𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘚𝘦𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘈𝘳𝘵 𝘊𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘔𝘺 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 with Judy Goffman Cutler, this Thursday, July 23rd at 6pm.

Cutler, one of the foremost experts on American illustration, helped create the art market that revived the reputations of Norman Rockwell, J.C. Leyendecker, Maxfield Parrish, Howard Pyle, and others. 𝘙𝘦𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘥 tells the story of art appreciation and how America has changed in the years since those painters created their masterpieces.

The Andean Cultural Center of Rhode Island, in collaboration with the Peruvian Consulate in Hartford, presents "Echoes of the Andes: Peru's Ancient Heritage," an exhibit showcasing a collection of pre-Hispanic Peruvian artifacts, including Chancay, Nasca, and Huaura ceramics.

The exhibit is available until July 24th at the Providence Public Library in the Rhode Island Room, 1st Floor.

The Kingston Chamber Music Festival (KCMF) will kick off its 38th season next week. This year's season, "Life, Liberty & Music," reflects on the enduring power of artistic expression in the context of America's 250th anniversary, exploring themes of freedom, identity, and creativity.

Concert One, on July 22nd at 7:30pm, traces the United States' journey from the chamber music world of 1776 to today's diverse musical landscape with pieces from Boccherini, Mozart, Dvořák, and Jessie Montgomery.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) invites URI faculty and staff to a special presentation of "How The Beatles Changed the World" with David Aguilar.

The session will look at how the Fab Four revolutionized the music industry as the first band to write all their own songs, produce the first music videos, and incorporate sound sampling into their tracks.

This Wednesday, July 8th, join Charter Books in Wakefield to welcome author, Kyleigh Leddy, in discussion of her new book, 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴.

𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘴 is a retelling of Jane Austen's 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘶𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯, set against the backdrop of a cottage on Nantucket. Leddy will be in conversation with Kylie Swanson, a travel content creator and author.

Welcome to Dr. Erik Loomis, of URI's History Department, who was recently appointed the new director for the Center for Humanities!

Loomis seeks for the Center to be an advocate for the humanities on campus, helping prepare students for a world where reevaluating what it means to be human becomes more and more important.

We are very excited to have Dr. Loomis as our director and can't wait for the upcoming year!

The Newport Historical Society (NHS) will host an Independence Day Open House this Saturday, July 4th, opening the Colony House to the public from 9-11am.

Additional features of the celebration include a ceremony by the Aquidneck Island chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a recreation of the first RI reading of the Declaration of Independence, and a concert from the Pawtuxet Rangers fife line. Catch the fireworks later that night with NHS at Fort Adams State Park.
