Abortion rights are not only being debated in Mexican legislatures. They are being challenged through coordinated misinformation, digital campaigns, activist training, political pressure and public demonstrations.

In Aguascalientes, the legal limit was reduced from 12 weeks to 6 weeks after conservative legislators pushed for restrictions. In Guanajuato, abortion remains criminalized through state legislation despite Supreme Court rulings finding criminalization unconstitutional.

Investigations have documented networks connecting Mexican and international conservative organizations, as well as organized digital campaigns targeting reproductive rights advocates and lawmakers.

This is about more than misinformation online. When false information is used to influence public opinion and political decisions, it can directly affect people’s access to reproductive healthcare.

Accurate information is reproductive justice.

On International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, we recognize that there is no single Indigenous experience. There are more than 5,000 distinct Indigenous Peoples and cultures around the world, representing approximately 476 million people across more than 90 countries.

This day is an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous cultures and knowledge, but also to confront the ongoing effects of colonization, displacement, discrimination and the continued extraction of resources from Indigenous territories.

Indigenous rights are human rights. Indigenous sovereignty is climate justice. Indigenous women’s rights are feminist issues.

Four years after the overturning of Roe v. Wade, millions of people across the United States continue to face barriers that extend far beyond the law itself.

Even where abortion is legally available, access can still be limited by mandatory counseling, judicial bypass requirements for minors, long waiting times, travel distances, the cost of care, childcare responsibilities, taking unpaid time off work, language barriers, fear of deportation, stigma, and a shortage of providers.

For many, these barriers overlap. Someone may be navigating financial hardship while also facing immigration concerns or living hours from the nearest clinic. These challenges disproportionately affect people with lower incomes, people of color, immigrants, young people, people with disabilities, and those living in rural communities.

Reproductive justice is about more than protecting the legal right to abortion. It means ensuring that everyone has the practical ability to access care safely, affordably, and with dignity.

Not all pregnancy support services provide medical care.

Across the United States, Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs) are receiving increasing amounts of public funding while presenting themselves as healthcare providers. Many have been criticized by medical organizations for providing misleading information, delaying access to evidence-based care, and collecting sensitive personal data without the same privacy protections as many healthcare providers.

As this carousel explores, understanding the difference between licensed medical care and ideologically driven services has never been more important.

The Fourth of July is often celebrated as a moment of independence, family, and community.

At the same time, it holds different meanings depending on history and lived experience. For many Indigenous peoples, it is a day of reflection rather than celebration, tied to the ongoing impact of land dispossession and colonial expansion. For Black Americans, it also reflects a nation that declared independence while slavery persisted, denying freedom to millions.

As we approach 250 years since the founding of the United States, this is also a moment to reflect on the fuller history of the country and those whose stories are often left out of the national narrative.

This Fourth of July, we invite our community to celebrate with awareness, care, and reflection.

What an evening. 💛

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the YWCA Ulster County Jamboree and helped make it such a joyful celebration of community. From the music, food, and raffles to the conversations, laughter, and connections made throughout the evening, we were reminded of the incredible strength of our community.

Events like these help support our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Your presence, generosity, and enthusiasm help sustain the programs and services that support women, children, and families across Ulster County.

A new chapter begins at YWCA Ulster County 💛

We are pleased to share a leadership update with our community.

We congratulate Executive Director Athena Fliakos and thank her for all she accomplished during her tenure. Through her leadership, YWCA Ulster County strengthened its campus, expanded programs, increased its community presence, and helped position the organization for continued growth. We wish Athena every success in her next chapter.

We are delighted to welcome Maureen Lashlee as Interim Executive Director. A respected Hudson Valley nonprofit leader and former CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Dutchess County, Maureen brings extensive experience growing mission driven organizations and deep ties to our region.

While leadership may evolve, our mission remains unchanged: to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

We invite our community to join us at the YWCA Ulster County Jamboree Fundraiser Party on June 26 as we celebrate Athena’s contributions, welcome this exciting new chapter, and continue building a stronger future for the women, children, and families we serve.
