Rising sophomore Andrew Murray has had a heck of a first year in our program.

After serving as a manager for our Rhode Island Men’s Basketball team during the academic year, Andrew kept grinding and, this summer, he worked with the Lowell Spinners of the The Futures League.

In the Spinners’ inaugural season in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, Andrew worked in baseball operations and data analytics.

Dr. Maria Grover is in New Orleans this week presenting her research at the AEJMC annual conference. She discussed research she has completed on corporate social advocacy and did an experiment within an NFL advocacy context.

The conference is the largest gathering of journalism and mass communication educators/researchers in the country.

This fall, Dr. Grover is teaching PRS360 Strategic Sports Communication and SMC201 Sports Audiences & Fandom. She is also developing a Case Studies in Sport Public Relations course as an elective for Spring ‘27.

Recent grad Tim Harniman (COM, ‘26) is taking his talents to Pittsburgh.

Tim, who graduated with a degree in Comm Studies but was a regular in SMC classes, has accepted a position in the account management department at DVSport — and we are thrilled for him.

Professor Molly Yanity had a co-authored article published this week in the SAGE Journal Publications “Communication & Sport.”

The piece is entitled “Conceptualizing ‘Gal Culture’: The Limits of Neoliberal Feminism as an Antidote to Bro Culture on The RE–CAP Show” and it analyzes the women’s soccer podcast, which is hosted by former USWNT stars Tobin Heath and Christen Press.

Then look no further as our friends in the FLM department are offering FLM451: The Sports Film. This 4-credit class will run from 2-5:45 p.m. on Wednesdays.

A big congratulations go out to Aidan Garvey (‘25), who has accepted a sports reporter position at KSN Local News / KODE Action 12 News in Joplin, Missouri.

Aidan was a regular on our ESPN+ streams and RIU broadcasts, and most recently did play-by-play for the Hartford Wolf Pack. Huge move for our guy. Aidan, keep making us proud!

And, it seems Joplin has become RIU-Midwest. Aidan is replacing Cam Iasimone at KSN/KODE and will also join Zachary Petrick, who is reporting at another Joplin station. That pipeline is invaluable. 🩵🤍
