Last year, Chris turned a spare bedroom into a home office/ craft room for me. Earlier today, I was looking at my closet bookcase loaded with children's picture books from my teaching days and beyond. One of my favorite's is Lynne Cheney's book, When Washington Crossed the Delaware. It is a great winter read and not too long for a read aloud or a short personal read.Although we celebrate our nation's birthday on July 4th, I am wondering if it really should have been a day in April or March 240 years ago when a group of rag tag farmers and tradesmen survived a winter at Valley Forge.

My last two posts were about reading. Today, I thought I would pass along a math game that is fun in my house. We usually do this after dinner. Here are the steps to play: 1. Find two dice for each person playing. 2. Roll the dice. 3. Add or subtract or multiply or divide the two numbers depending on the rules from the start. 4. First one to shout out answer wins. Variation to make challenging: Make Mom or Dad use 5 die. Loads of fun!

Another one of my favorite books is Tuesday by David Weisner (Caldecott Medal). This is a great for beginning readers. The author tells a great story without words only pictures. It is a great book for parents and children to talk about what is happening in the picture. It is also a great one to see if the student would have a different ending than the one the author depicted.

Here's to a great start to a brand new school year! The start of a new school year makes me think of the first day of school when I taught in public schools. One of my favorite books to read to my students was The Island of the Skog by Steven Kellogg. A great book about working together and sometimes realizing things are not as they seem.
