Mrs. Donna Andrews's KES 1st grade students set sail on a literary adventure today! They dove into Stuart Little, exploring the opening chapters and then rolling up their sleeves for a hands-on challenge: crafting their very own fishing poles to step into Stuart's world.
This clever STEM twist transforms reading into action. By building alongside their favorite character, students don't just understand Stuart's quest for adventure and resourcefulness—they live it.

Mrs. Donna Andrews's KES 4th grade students dove into a hands-on project linking barrier islands to—you guessed it—silly putty. Here's the clever connection: both act tough under sudden stress but flow like liquid under slow, steady pressure.
Short-Term Stress (Solid Mode): Drop silly putty, it bounces. Yank it fast, it snaps. The polymer chains don't have time to budge.
Long-Term Stress (Fluid Mode): Leave it sitting, it puddles. Pull it gently, it stretches. The chains slide past each other.
The Island Twist: Barrier islands play by the same rules. Hurricanes hammer them like a solid force, causing sudden erosion. But daily tides, currents, and rising seas? They slowly shift the entire island toward the mainland over decades.
By squishing silly putty, these students unlocked a big truth: barrier islands aren't stuck in place—they're constantly on the move!
