Recently the KHS Band and Jazz Band performed at States. According to Mr. Sherk “Approximately 65 students attended the event. There were 17 events. Of these, 15 received 1 ratings, and 2 received a 2. 5 of the events received a perfect score and three of those events were nominated for exemplary performances meaning the judge could nominate 1 event of the day out of 50 to receive this award. This is a very unusual award. This nomination went to the KHS Jazz Band under Greg Hunts direction, Josh Benz trombone solo and Daniel Maki French Horn Solo. This was certainly one of strongest showings at state for the solo and ensemble competition.”

Mrs. Dallapiazza's 7th grade math students explored the surface area of rectangular prisms through a wrapping paper activity. They were told to figure out exactly how much wrapping paper was needed to cover 2 different sized boxes. This activity helped develop their understanding of surface area before it was introduced as a new concept.

The KHS AP Literature student boards and portfolios are on display in the KHS Library. The displays are a summary of information learned throughout the year.

The displays serve a number of purposes including helping the students review for the exam, highlighting for everyone the information the students have learned and activities accomplished throughout the year, and promoting English and the class for the underclassmen.

Congratulations to all the hard-working students on a wonderful year!

Congratulations are in order for Kingsford Middle School 6th grade student Kalia Lampi!

Kalia was recently chosen as one of the winners of the annual Meemic Masterpiece Art Contest. Miss Westphal’s 2nd trimester Art 6 class were assigned the task of creating a submission, and the students pictured completed the entire submission process. Each year, this contest invites K-12th grade students to submit an original piece of artwork using a theme for inspiration. For this year, the theme was: For Your Safety. Students had to choose between vehicle, pedestrian or online safety. Kalia said, “My art piece was inspired by driver's safety, I drew a fox crossing the road, and the person in the car on their phone. I used pencils and watercolors.”

The committee of judges chose 44 winners from entries submitted from students in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia. Each winning student artist will receive a HP Chromebook, a framed certificate, and their submission will be featured in a virtual art gallery later this year. In addition, Kalia’s winning submission also earns a $300 school supply grant to be used by the teacher who coordinated the contest entry for the following school year.

This contest was conducted by The Meemic Foundation for the Future of Education, a non-profit company started in 1992 by the Meemic Insurance Company. Both companies are focused on serving and giving back to dedicated educational communities.

Today KMS students in grades 6-8 and KHS students had the opportunity to listen to speaker Jeff Olson. Mr. Olson showed the documentary “Do it For Daniel,” shared about his journey, and answered student questions.

In the words of Mr. Olson, “Do It For Daniel is the story of Daniel Olson and his battle with depression and anxiety. It is our HOPE that Daniel's story will get people talking about depression and anxiety, and change the stigma that goes with mental health.”
