CCS Families and Fans!

To help provide a safe, enjoyable, and smooth game-day experience for everyone, Cleveland County Schools has implemented a few important updates for all athletic events.

👜 Clear Bag Policy
Our Clear Bag Policy went into effect for all Cleveland County Schools athletic events on January 1, 2026. This policy applies to all schools and is part of our ongoing efforts to enhance safety and streamline entry at all venues. Please see the attached flyer for approved and prohibited items.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Spectator Guidelines
To ensure a positive experience for all fans:
• Spectators of eighth-grade age or younger must be accompanied by a legal guardian or responsible adult (21 years of age or older) to enter and remain inside the stadium or gymnasium. The accompanying adult is responsible for the child's supervision and actions at all times.
• Spectators of any age are not permitted to congregate outside of the stands or designated viewing areas.
• Fighting, rough play, threatening language, or creating an unsafe environment will not be tolerated.

Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in removal from current and future athletic events without ticket reimbursement.

This year, we are streamlining our process for tracking attendance and submitting notes for absences and tardies. All submissions should be made through the Attendance Hub form, which is accessible via the KMMS website homepage at https://kmmiddle.clevelandcountyschools.org/. Please ensure that notes are submitted within two business days of a student’s return to school.

North Carolina Statutes recognize the following as lawful/excused absences from school.

Illness or injury
Isolation
Death in the immediate family of the student
Medical or Dental Appointment
Court Attendance if the student is involved
Religious Observations
Educational Opportunity. This requires prior approval from the principal. Request forms are available in the front office. Vacations are not considered educational opportunities.

We are thrilled to welcome Brent Hawkins to KMMS as a CTE teacher!

Please see the message from Mr. Hawkins:

My name is Brent Hawkins, and I am excited to join the team at KMMS and share my passion for Career and Technical Education (CTE).

After spending many years working in manufacturing, I bring real world experience and industry knowledge into the classroom to help students connect what they learn with future career opportunities.

My wife, Sharon, and I have two children. Our son, Greg, is a project manager and is married to his wife, Haley. Our daughter, Evie, recently graduated from high school and will be attending Lenoir-Rhyne University this fall.

Outside of school, I enjoy coaching and watching softball, riding mountain bikes, and working outdoors and around the house. I look forward to building relationships with my students and helping them develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to be successful both in and out of the classroom.

We are thrilled to welcome Eric Putnam to KMMS as a CTE teacher!

Please see the information from Mr. Putnam:

Eric Putnam is a dedicated educator with 21 years of service in Cleveland County Schools. He has spent more than two decades making a positive impact in the classroom and his community.

Outside of education, Mr. Putnam enjoys spending time with his family visiting Carolina Beach, Oak Island and Boone. He is also a loyal fan of the Chicago Cubs and enjoys following baseball throughout the season.

Eric has been married to his wife, Vicki, for 27 years. Together, they have a 22 year-old son who has been a source of pride and joy in their lives.
