Today we celebrate one of our nation's most iconic symbols, the American flag. 248 years ago, in the very first years of our nation's existence, the flag of the United States was adopted by the Second Continental Congress. Since its adoption, the flag has been looked to in times of hope and times of uncertainty as a visible bond that binds our heart to our country. As our country celebrates 250 years this year, we celebrate the flag and everything it means to be a citizen of the United States.

Women Veterans Recognition Day celebrates the signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act in 1948, but women's direct contributions to war efforts go back to America's founding. Since the revolutionary war, women have served in our armed forces, both in direct combat and support roles. Today, nearly one in five U.S. service members is a woman, and women veterans are the fastest growing group of veterans.
Our country's military history is incomplete without acknowledging the contributions of women. Today is a small way to recognize the women veterans who served courageously to protect our freedoms and paved the way for current and future women serving in the military.

A new veterans bill includes Major Richard Star Act but cuts benefits for 1.5 million to fund it Congressional Republicans introduced the Take Care of America's Veterans Act, but must offset some of its costs.

On this Friday and every day in between, we pause to remember the brave men and women who are currently deployed; our family members and loved ones and the many individuals we don’t know, all who have chosen service over self.
