The Wood Firing Exchange Exists:
as a program at JD Jorgenson Pottery that is committed to experiential learning through wood firing. It was established in 2007 by JD Jorgenson at his studio. Though on paper and in idea this program came into focus over the years as a response to students pursuing a professional path of studio ceramics. The program exists currently only at JD Jorgenson Pottery, t
he hub. The vision for this program in the future is to establish other artists' studios who are partners of The Wood Firing Exchange across the globe. The Wood Firing Exchange Creates:
an environment for rich learning through day to day studio experiences. Partners of the exchange can apply, or be invited to participate in creating a physical network of working ceramic artists that focus on a professional wood fired ceramics career and lifestyle. The Wood Firing Exchange strives to compliment the fundamental knowledge gained in college by offering first hand experience and knowledge from ceramic artists that are at the forefront of wood fired studio ceramics who create place in their local communities. The Wood Firing Exchange Provides:
committed individuals time to create. This in turn helps build momentum that will broaden, nurture and empower the students through clay and wood firing. It is and idea and program is based on sense of place, community engagement with a focus on materials and intent. Partnerships- for ceramic artists with studios that can accommodate and commit to teaching individuals through an assistantship or an apprenticeship environment. An accepted artist(s) and studio become a physical place for The Wood Firing Exchange to Exist. This in turn creates a limitless network for experiential learning by ceramic artists who focus on wood firing and a professional studio practice. Assistantships-for recent college graduates that can commit to 1 year study with an option to extend. Applicants should have prior ceramics experience and a strong vision for a profession in ceramics. Individuals chosen will learn all aspects of studio work. They will also learn about establishing oneself through exhibitions, sales and writing, community engagement and teaching. The participant will also complete a body of work to culminate in a solo exhibition. Apprenticeships- for recent college students and individuals seeking to synthesize contemporary applications of Karatsu kickwheel throwning, tool making and decoration. This will be combined with their contemporary future practice. Duration is minimum of 2 years or longer. Artist in Residence-for emerging and established ceramic artists. Minimum 6-12 months.
