– Congrats to the tennis team for an impressive win in its first match of the season. The Nighthawks beat Gates County 9-0, with singles wins by Kai Stabley, India Cherry, Finn Steuart, Emma Butler, Lila Foubister and Bradley Anne Folkes. The Nighthawks also took care of all three double courts with wins by Camdyn Sawyer and Risley Spencer, Maeve Preisser and Elizabeth Quinn, and Camille Barnes and Kenzi Ouellette. The varsity team returns to action Tuesday at Catholic.

– The JV Soccer team opened their home season last night against NEAAT's varsity squad in a hard-fought battle that ended in a 4-3 defeat. After a goal by the visitors, Daniel Evans ran onto a through ball from the kickoff and finished to level the score, but NEAAT responded with two more goals before the break for a 3-1 lead. Nate Riddick found the back of the net off a slick assist from Evans and Noah Carter added a late goal before the Nighthawks ran out of time to force a tie.

– The varsity opened their season on the road against Catholic last night and came away with a 4-0 victory in first-year head coach Billy Folkes' debut. The Nighthawks came out strong in the first half, with Gavin Arnett playing the role of conductor and racking up three assists. He opened the scoring by serving Kyler Breiholz a ball just outside the box for a one-touch finish. Shortly after, Arnett executed a nifty give-and-go with Cole Voight, who finished with style in the corner of the goal to extend the lead to 2-0. Arnett then delivered a corner kick onto the foot of Sam Summerton, who buried a one-touch volley to make it 3-0. The Nighthawks added one more before the half after Voight was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty kick. Luis Alfaro stepped up and launched it past the Crusaders' keeper.

The second half saw a strong showing from both sides and remained scoreless, with the Nighthawks' defense stifling a renewed push. Keeper Kevin Vicente impressed with two athletic saves to preserve the clean sheet. The Nighthawks continue their season on the road, leaving Friday for two games in Cary at the NCSCA Select Kickoff Classic at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Dear First Flight Families,

I hope everyone is having a great week! We are excited to welcome our students back to First Flight High School and get the 2026-2027 school year underway. A few important reminders:

– Chromebook Pickup - Ninth Grade

Chromebook pickup for all ninth-grade students will be Wednesday, Aug. 19, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Media Center. If you have any questions about Chromebook pickup, please reach out to Kimberly Dickson at [email protected].

– Infinite Campus Annual Updates

Parents, please make sure you have completed your Returning Student Verification and Annual Updates in Infinite Campus as soon as possible if you have not already done so. Students will not be able to log in to their Chromebooks if this information has not been completed. We have sent reminders about this throughout the summer, so please take a moment to make sure your student's information is updated.

– Open House - Thursday, Aug. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Student schedules will be finalized at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

We will also hold a 35-minute meeting specifically for all ninth-grade students and transfer students beginning at 5:10 p.m. in the David E. Oaksmith Auditorium. We encourage all ninth-grade and transfer students and their families to attend. ALL students and their families will be able to walk the campus to visit classrooms and meet teachers from 5 to 7.

– First Day of School - Monday, Aug. 24

Our first day of school will be Monday, Aug. 24! The school day begins at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m. For our student drivers, please remember to allow extra time to arrive at school on time for the hectic first week back at FFHS, FFMS and FFES. For our parent dropoffs, please remember to use the front entrance and pull into the front circle to let out your student at the front doors – don't use the very busy student parking lot to drop off your child! And for our e-Bike riders, don't forget to walk your bike to the rack once you hit campus.

Our bell schedule is as follows:

1st Period – 8:30-9:55
2nd Period – 10-11:25
3rd Period – 11:30-1:20 (1st Lunch 11:30-55, 2nd Lunch 12:55-1:20)
FLY Time (Homerooms the first week of school) – 1:25-2
4th Period – 2:05-3:30

– FFHS Flight Log

Our first Flight Log of the school year will be sent out this Friday at 3:35 p.m. Each Friday, I will send the Flight Log through Infinite Campus with important parent updates, announcements, and upcoming events. The Flight Log link also will be shared here on our page and on the front page of the FFHS website.

Please make sure you are keeping up with these weekly communications throughout the school year. Staying informed will help ensure that you and your student don't miss important information and opportunities.

We are looking forward to a great school year and are excited to have our students back in the building! Thank you for your continued support of First Flight High School.

Here's what's going on the next two weeks as we prepare for the first day of school next Monday!

Also, congrats to Mr. Lee and the band – we are incredibly proud to announce that the First Flight High School Band Program has been recognized by the North Carolina Bandmasters Association as a Program of Distinction!

This prestigious honor recognizes band programs that demonstrate excellence in music education, student achievement, performance, community involvement, and earn outstanding ratings at Concert Band Music Performance Adjudication. It is a testament to the dedication, hard work, and passion of our incredible students, staff, families, administrators, and supporters. This achievement reflects countless hours of rehearsals, performances, and a shared commitment to musical excellence. Every member of our band family has played a role in making this recognition possible, and we couldn't be more proud.
