Today is officially Mrs. Rubi’s last day with KC Upward Bound. 😭 We will miss her so much, but this isn’t “goodbye,” it’s “see you around!” Thank you, Rubi, for your dedication to our students and the mission of TRIO. You’ve made a tremendous impact in students’ lives and ours. ❤️

On June 4th, KCUB took a day trip over to Tyler. 🚐

We visited the Earth & Space Science Center where we checked out their interactive exhibits and watched a film on the NASA Artemis program. 🔭🪐

KCUB then took a tour of the lovely Tyler Junior College campus before heading to East Texas Food Bank for some volunteer work. We make these hairnets look good! 💁‍♀️💁‍♂️

We’d like to say thanks to several community organizations and individuals for presenting a variety of topics and activities during our summer program so far.

Career prep: We heard about interview skills from KC instructor Michele Daniels-Cornett and resume building from recruiter Ashleigh Blackwell. CPA Shelby Cannon also took time to tell us about being a CPA, education pathways, and other accounting-related careers. A visit to City of Kilgore’s City Hall helped us learn about public service jobs, including city management, fire protection, and law enforcement.

Personal skills: Mercy Manor helped students think about developmental assets and their social-emotional skills, while emphasizing the importance of support systems. Aspire Mentoring Program from City of Longview’s Partners in Prevention presented about making a positive first impression, as well as about their experiences in social work and public service.

Tech Talk: KC instructor Matt Gayetsky helped students think about the emotional, social, and legal impacts of AI.

We appreciate everyone who provides great info to and leads activities for our participants. Your support and leadership mean so much to the KCUB program.

Thank you to City of Kilgore, Texas for allowing us to visit City Hall this week. We learned about various jobs in city government and public service, as well as about potential education pathways for students interested in careers in government, fire protection, or law enforcement. Thank you to Mayor Spradlin, City Manager Rowe, Fire Chief Riley, Police Chief Hunter, Fire Marshal Linder, and several others for lending us your time and telling us about your work.
