During our valentines dinner, Emily and I took a moment to reflect on what we’ve learned about one another, and ourselves, in the time since we got married.
We shared vulnerably how we felt the other matured in showing affection and communicating love. We also asked each other honestly how the other felt we could improve in these same areas.
Throughout the conversation, there were many ‘confession’ moments, something Emily and I started a few months ago...
...if you have something on your mind or heart that your nervous to share, because you‘re worried about how it will be received, you raise your hand and say boldly, ‘confession’!
This is our way of telling the other person, ‘I need you to listen to how I feel and not judge, I need you to really stop and hear what I’m saying.’
We’ve found it to effectively insert a moment of love, truth, and grace into any conversation, no matter how heated or how big the misunderstanding.
In loving each other HONESTLY like this, we’ve found our communication improve a thousand times... and things that previously would have been bottled up, only to boil over into bigger issues down the road, get buried in an instant without a chance to become a problem.
I’m so in love with my wife... and during this conversation last night I realized I was having dinner with a picture of the love that God has for us in Christ.
May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant.
