Little flashback to when a group of our students rounded up and moved our PSC cattle herd. This is one way we collaborate our equine and cattle farm. Majority of PSC owned horses are cowbred(Bob Evans horses), meaning they naturally have “cow sense”. Moving cattle with horses is known to be less stressful for cattle.
Getting our horses out of the arena and in real life situations such as this has provided our students and horses valuable experiences! Students learn how to read cattle, work on stockmanship and horsemanship, navigate cattle through gates, creeks, tight alleyways, students get to use advanced horse maneuvers to open gates off horse back, push cattle, navigate horses in a way that is responsive, efficient, and effective in a timely fashion for the best and easiest way to guide cattle in the intended direction, learn to be forward thinking, and so much more! Horses get to break up their time in the arena and take a break from barn. This teaches horses how to hold themselves while crossing different terrain, going up and down hills, crossing water, rate cattle, be exposed to a new environment, and new experiences.
We also use this time to make notes about fencing conditions, pasture management, cattle health and note seen wildlife.
