"Nauman's Northern School for Blacksmiths" (NNSB) is for the serious student of forging, repousse', and other free-hand metalworking processes. Dan Nauman has been forging since 1979, has been in business as a blacksmith since 1993, and has been teaching, demonstrating, and lecturing around the country since 1995. From 2002 to 2010, Nauman chaired the "Controlled Hand Forging" committee fr the "Artist Blacksmith's Association of North America" (ABANA), which wrote in depth lessons in forging fundamentals for ABANA's quarterly how-to magazine, "The Hammer's Blow". Nauman has studied the work of famed Austrian master blacksmith Cyril Colnik (1871-1958), and had a video produced on Colnik that aired on Milwaukee and Wisconsin Public Television in 1998. Nauman's metalwork can be found in some of the finest homes, museums, sculpture gardens, and more throughout Wisconsin and around the country. He has won several awards for design and craftsmanship from the "National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association" (NOMMA). In 2010, Nauman was honored by "Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum" in Milwaukee, WI, who sponsored a solo exhibition of his work. Nauman's teaching style is for the serious forging student, from beginner to the seasoned professional. His style ranges from classic to contemporary forms, and also French repousse', and sculpture. Nauman gets deep into the how's and why's of forging and other free-hand metalwork, and also into a bit of forging philosophy, with a bit of humor in the mix. The NNSB has four complete coal forging stations, along with most tools and equipment you would expect to find in a well equipped forging studio. Most workshops are on weekends, however week-long workshops may be arranged, as well as tutorials for the very serious student. Further, internships are available, ranging from two to ten weeks.
