Kim Johnson, administrator of Wings Academy, said when the development of the school began, she envisioned having a facility dog who would become a consistent, familiar and trusted member of the school community.

Wings Academy is currently looking for padded protective helmets for our students!

If you have a padded helmet that a child has outgrown or no longer needs, we would be incredibly grateful to take it off your hands and put it to good use. 💛

We are especially in need of sizes Small and Medium, Soft Shell Helmet for Children and Adults (for safety from falls, seizure activity, etc.), but we will gladly accept ANY size to keep on hand for current and future student needs.

If you have a helmet you would be willing to donate, please send us a message or contact Wings Academy (309) 225-8655 to arrange drop-off or pick-up.

Every donation helps us provide the individualized supports and equipment our students need to be safe, successful, and ready to learn. 🐝💛

🐝💛 THE HIVE IS FEELING THE LOVE! 💛🐝

Wings Academy received an incredibly generous surprise this morning! Darrell Peck of Jackson and Peck Financial Group presented a $2,500 donation to Casey Miller, Executive Director of the Henry-Stark Special Education District #801, right here at Wings Academy! Of course, our favorite four-legged staff member, Clover, Wings Academy’s Facility Dog, was happy to join them for the presentation! 🐾💛

We continue to be absolutely overwhelmed by the generosity and support our students and program have received from this community. Every donation to Wings Academy helps us provide additional resources, experiences, materials, and opportunities that directly benefit our students and help them learn, grow, and become more independent.

Mr. Peck, THANK YOU! Your generosity means so much to all of us at Wings Academy and Henry-Stark Special Education District #801. More importantly, it means additional opportunities for some pretty incredible kids. 💛

We opened our doors just a few short weeks ago, and the support surrounding our students has already been extraordinary. We are building something very special here, and we are so grateful for the people in our community who believe in our students and want to be part of it.

It really does take a village—or, in our case, a HIVE! 🐝🍯

🐾💛 Meet Clover — Wings Academy’s Facility Dog! 🐝
We are SO excited to officially introduce a very special member of the Wings Academy family — CLOVER! 🍀🐾

On August 25, Clover officially graduated from her training through Paws Giving Independence (PGI) in Peoria, Illinois, and she is now ready to begin her important new role as the Facility Dog at Wings Academy!

One of the photos below includes three very special people who played critical roles in helping Clover become the amazing dog she is today — her puppy raiser, trainer, and foster mom. They poured countless hours of love, patience, training, and dedication into preparing Clover for this next chapter. We are incredibly grateful to them and to everyone at PGI who helped prepare Clover for a life of helping others. 💛

So, what exactly will Clover do at Wings Academy?

As a facility dog, Clover will work alongside our staff to support students throughout their school day. She may help students regulate during difficult moments, provide comfort and companionship, encourage communication and social interaction, motivate students during academic or therapy activities, support transitions, practice responsibility and daily living skills, and simply provide a calm, reassuring presence when a student needs a friend nearby. Sometimes, sitting next to Clover, petting her soft fur, taking a walk with her, or having her quietly nearby may be exactly what a student needs to feel safe, connected, and ready to learn. 🐾

And Clover has already started making some professional connections! She has become friends with Walter, the therapy dog at Irving School in Kewanee. We think these two make a pretty great team of four-legged school professionals! 🐶🐶

When Clover isn't working at Wings, she will go home each day to her forever family, Greg and Kim Johnson in Kewanee. Kim serves as the Coordinator at Wings Academy, so Clover gets the benefit of going to work AND going home with one of her people every day! 🍀

We know Clover is going to bring something incredibly special to the Hive. Our students will learn from her, work with her, care for her, and—most importantly—build relationships with her.

Welcome to Wings Academy, Clover! 🐝🍀🐾

We can't wait to watch you spread a little love, comfort, confidence, and CALM throughout the Hive! 💛

The Wings Academy team would like to send a HUGE and heartfelt THANK YOU to the Henry-Stark Special Education Association for their incredibly generous donation to Wings Academy!

What an amazing surprise—and one that is so very appreciated as we prepare to open our doors and begin this exciting new chapter! ❤️

One of the things that makes Henry-Stark so special is the way our staff support one another, celebrate one another, and come together when there is a need. This generous gift is another wonderful example of that spirit. Wings Academy may be a new program, but we already know that we have an entire Henry-Stark family cheering us on and helping us build something special for our students.

🐝💛 EXCITING NEWS FOR WINGS ACADEMY! 💛🐝

We are thrilled to announce that Wings Academy has been awarded a $5,000 Envision Equity Grant from the NEA Foundation! 🎉👏

This generous grant will help fund CALM training for our Wings Academy staff—an essential part of building the supportive, relationship-centered environment we want for every student who walks through our doors.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 What is CALM?

Originating in Scotland, CALM is a relationship-based approach focused on understanding behavior, building trusting relationships, supporting emotional regulation, and responding to individuals in ways that promote safety, dignity, respect, and well-being.

For our students, relationships come first. By equipping our staff with CALM strategies and a deeper understanding of the needs behind behavior, we can create an environment where students feel safe, understood, supported, and ready to grow. 🪽💛

We are incredibly grateful to the NEA Foundation for investing in our vision and helping us bring this specialized training to the Wings Academy team!
