On June 19th, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the proclamation was finally enforced in Texas, and every enslaved person was freed.

Juneteenth (June 19th) has since been observed as a second Independence Day in various parts of the US, often as a celebration of African-American culture. The celebration is a great opportunity to think about the importance of justice and equality and freedom, both in the law and in practice, for all Americans.
