So proud of Ballard County Conservation District Board Member Jarrett Pace!!
This week's Farmer Friday features Jarrett Pace of J*P Farms.
Growing up on the farm alongside his dad and grandad, Jarrett Pace always knew agriculture would be part of his future. Today, he proudly works with his family at J*P Farms, a fourth-generation farming operation that raises soybeans, corn and wheat. The farm’s name, J*P Farms, reflects the family’s history, as each generation has shared the initials “J.A.P.” Together, they continue a tradition of hard work while helping the operation grow for future generations.
Working side by side with his dad, Allen Pace, every day has given Jarrett the opportunity to learn firsthand what it takes to run a successful farming operation. From planning each day's work to making important management decisions, Allen has helped shape Jarrett's work ethic and passion for agriculture while passing down knowledge built over years of experience.
During the busy season, each day begins with making a plan, servicing equipment, and preparing for the work ahead. Whether maintaining equipment before sunrise or spending long hours in the field, Jarrett enjoys helping keep the operation running smoothly and efficiently throughout the growing season.
Soybeans play an important role at J*P Farms as both a valuable cash crop and a key part of the farm's crop rotation with corn and wheat. The operation also raises seed stock soybeans for two companies, helping produce high-quality seed for future growing seasons. "No two years are ever the same. Having both soybeans and corn helps us spread our risk while giving us the opportunity to be profitable with more than one crop." Jarrett said.
Like many farm families, the Pace family knows that success depends on more than what happens in the field. Jarrett works closely with his family's marketing advisor and trusted seed, fertilizer, and crop protection dealers to help secure the best value for the operation. He understands that making informed business decisions is just as important as planting and harvesting a successful crop.
Although agriculture continues to change, Jarrett believes there is value in balancing innovation with the fundamentals that have served his family for generations. "We're always open to new technologies," he said, "but we still need to make sure we're doing the basics and what we know works for us." As new tools and precision agriculture continue to advance, he looks forward to finding ways to improve efficiency while preserving the traditions that have made J*P Farms successful.
Looking ahead, Jarrett is committed to helping J*P Farms continue growing for future generations. His advice to young people interested in agriculture is to find a mentor and never be afraid to ask questions. "Learn from those around you," he said. "Everyone has strengths to share, and asking for help is one of the best ways to become a better farmer." He hopes the lessons he's learned from his dad and grandad will one day be passed on to the next generation, continuing the legacy of J*P Farms for years to come.
