Alumni Spotlight: Richie Weit ’16
Richie’s passion for science brought him to Keuka College. But it was an art class that brought his future into focus.
Richie Weit ’16 entered KC as a biology major, and he pursued several Field Period® internships in various clinical settings. Scrubbing into orthopedic surgeries confirmed his interest in the science of life, and serving as an assistant trainer for a professional soccer team taught him about performance under pressure.
Then, in his senior year, he took a photography course with Assistant Professor of Art Melissa Newcomb, and he started to see things in a new light.
“The lake was a big draw for me, and the camera allowed me to capture the environment,” he recalls.
As his photo excursions took him further into the wild, Richie realized he wanted to work outdoors, not in a lab. He also developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity of plant life throughout the Finger Lakes region and across the continent.
“Plus,” he says, “I had some rock-climbing experience. So, it just felt natural to pursue a career as an arborist,” he says.
Now, Richie is owner and operator of Victory Tree Care, providing pruning, planting, and hazard mitigation services for homes and businesses in the greater Rochester area. He is certified as an arborist, tree climber, and risk assessment specialist by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
“We take pride in caring for our clients and also the trees we live with,” he says. “By implementing scientifically proven techniques, we’re fostering sustainability in these stunning urban forests.”
“Running a business definitely has its challenges,” Richie adds, “but I’m grateful I can do what I love every day.”
