The future of healthcare in our region is taking shape, right here at Keuka College.

Today, we celebrated a major milestone: the ribbon-cutting on our nearly completed Rural Outpatient Health Clinic, a 5,885-square-foot facility designed to bring greater access to care to our community while preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals.

When the clinic opens later this year, students in Nursing, Occupational Therapy and related healthcare programs will gain hands-on experience in a real-world clinical setting, while local residents gain an essential new resource for quality healthcare close to home.

Made possible in part by $1.6 million in federal support secured with the help of U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer, the Rural Outpatient Health Clinic represents an investment in the health, education, and future of the communities we call home.

Today, we’re celebrating what’s been built, and everything that’s still to come.

Another summer Field Period® check-in – this time from Guadalajara, Mexico!

David Arana Riese, a sophomore sustainability major and Spanish minor from Glens Falls, N.Y., is interning at Acuario Michin Guadalajara – an aquarium inspired by indigenous worldviews and committed to preserving the region’s amazing biodiversity.

David says, “I’m interested in becoming a marine biologist, so I wanted to get experience with animal care and environmental education. I’ve been researching different species and preparing informational materials for employees and visitors. I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned in class to real research and conservation efforts.”

Alumni Spotlight: Richie Weit ’16

Richie’s passion for science brought him to Keuka College. But it was an art class that brought his future into focus.

Richie Weit ’16 entered KC as a biology major, and he pursued several Field Period® internships in various clinical settings. Scrubbing into orthopedic surgeries confirmed his interest in the science of life, and serving as an assistant trainer for a professional soccer team taught him about performance under pressure.

Then, in his senior year, he took a photography course with Assistant Professor of Art Melissa Newcomb, and he started to see things in a new light.

“The lake was a big draw for me, and the camera allowed me to capture the environment,” he recalls.

As his photo excursions took him further into the wild, Richie realized he wanted to work outdoors, not in a lab. He also developed a deeper appreciation for the diversity of plant life throughout the Finger Lakes region and across the continent.

“Plus,” he says, “I had some rock-climbing experience. So, it just felt natural to pursue a career as an arborist,” he says.

Now, Richie is owner and operator of Victory Tree Care, providing pruning, planting, and hazard mitigation services for homes and businesses in the greater Rochester area. He is certified as an arborist, tree climber, and risk assessment specialist by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).

“We take pride in caring for our clients and also the trees we live with,” he says. “By implementing scientifically proven techniques, we’re fostering sustainability in these stunning urban forests.”

“Running a business definitely has its challenges,” Richie adds, “but I’m grateful I can do what I love every day.”

Alumni Spotlight: Ruby Nguyen ’12

Ruby’s professional journey has taken her from Vietnam to the Finger Lakes and back again – now as Partnership Director for Keuka College’s programs at UEF (Ho Chi Minh City) and VNU-IS (Hanoi).

Ruby Nguyen ’12 started earning her KC degree through the College’s partnership with VNU-IS before transferring to the Keuka Park campus.

She recalls, “I arrived shy and reserved, but the small classes meant I couldn’t just fade into the background. My professors encouraged me to trust my own voice.”

That support inspired Ruby to serve as a mentor to incoming students and to start a campus club dedicated to helping peers develop leadership skills. She also dove headfirst into the program, spending one summer interning at a fashion label in New York City.

“Those opportunities were formative,” she says. “They also confirmed something important for me: My true passion was in developing people, not products.”

Since then, Ruby has held leadership positions at several of Vietnam’s leading educational institutions, with a continued focus on fostering international collaboration.

One priority in her new role is launching a Keuka College marketing degree at UEF alongside the business management programs offered at both UEF and VNU-IS.

“I want all these programs to be recognized as premier pathways for Vietnamese students who want an American education with a strong emphasis on experiential learning and career readiness,” Ruby says.

Keuka College Vice President Pete Bekisz ’12 comments, “We’re thrilled to have Ruby leading our international partnerships. No one knows all our campuses like she does, and she’ll be key in building academic communities that reflect Keuka College’s identity while evolving with Vietnam’s dynamic business landscape.”

Ruby adds, “This is a full-circle moment for me – it’s all about helping more students access the same transformational education that shaped who I am today.”
