Today we remember Bet and Dinah, two teenage Black girls enslaved by the Van Rensselaer family in Albany, NY. On Nov 17, 1793, they lit a fire which burned down the homes of dozens of slave-owners, stoking fears of a slave uprising which likely hastened New York to abolish slavery. After confessing to the arson, Bet and Dinah were executed by the state.
