Today, Ketchikan Indian Community honors Nettie Jones Day and remembers the courage of Nettie Jones, her daughter Irene, and their family.
On September 10, 1929, a lawsuit was filed on behalf of the Jones family challenging segregation in the Ketchikan School District. Their determination to stand up for their children and fight for equal access to education became an important part of our community’s history.
Nearly a century later, we remember their courage, their strength, and their willingness to stand up for what was right. Their story reminds us that meaningful change often begins with people who refuse to accept injustice.
Today, we honor Nettie and Irene Jones and the legacy their family left for the generations who followed.
