SDI Internship Opportunities – Second Posting

The Sustainable Development Institute at the College of Menominee Nation is now accepting applications for our second round of Summer 2026 internship opportunities!

Indigenous Phenology Internship (1 position)
Lawrence Environmental Justice and Relationships with Water Internship (2 positions)

These internships are a great opportunity to:
Gain practical experience
Work alongside mentors
Build professional skills
Contribute to meaningful environmental and community-based work

We are officially on Day 3 of our 3-Day Flint Corn Workshop Series!

On Monday, participants created handmade jewelry using corn seeds, and on Tuesday, they crafted traditional corn husk dolls.

3-Day Flint Corn Workshop Series

Join us for a hands-on, educational experience exploring the history, culture, and uses of flint corn!

May 11–13
11:30 AM – 1:30 PM
College of Menominee Nation – Downstairs Kitchen

What to expect:
• Learn the history, origin, and diversification of flint corn
• Explore the cultural significance and vibrant colors of Indian corn
• Discover nutrition, processing, and hominy-making
• Participate in fun, hands-on activities each day:
– Seed jewelry
– Corn husk doll making
– Corn husk cup mat creation

Last Thursday, as part of SDI’s Earth Week celebration, we hosted a fun and engaging Treasure Hunt!

Deputy Midwest Tribal Resilience Liaison Allison Scott encouraged faculty, staff, and students to participate by taking selfies with items powered by renewable energy sources, specifically the sun, water, and wind.

2026 Earth Week Theme

Earth Day is April 22 every year. In honor of Earth Day, we dedicate an entire week to highlighting various environmental issues. This year’s theme is Our Power, Our Planet.

Today’s Theme: Wild Range Shifts & Tribal Lands

REMINDER!

Our Women’s Empowerment and Sustainable Teachings event is this Friday, April 24, 2026!

Day events include our keynote speaker, Ojibwe Artist Jessica Gokey, a panel discussion with Native women leading sustainability work, and afternoon breakouts focused on art, business, Indigenous foods, and our language. We’ll also have basket raffles that support Native women and other locally owned businesses.

Registration is capped at 100 participants, so make sure to reserve your space!

Waewaenen to CMN staff and students who helped clean up our area on Hwy 47, and waewaenen to the Menominee County Highway Department for providing the clean-up supplies. We walked one mile and collected 18 large bags of garbage. What did we find? Tires, a muffler, hundreds of shooters, plastic shopping bags, plastic cups and straws, cans, bottles, a blanket, vapes, and so much more.

While we are highlighting Earth Day this week, we remain committed to our teachings to assure this land is even better for the next generations. It’s easy to make changes in your life to be more sustainable. Keep a garbage bag in your car instead of throwing it out onto our lands, carry your dishbags with you instead of using disposable products, drink from a reusable water bottle, recycle, and care for the land that our ancestors fought so hard for us to have.

Our CMN team is motivated by the clean-up and wants to plan monthly clean-ups and beautification. That’s the kind! Eneq!
