Today was our 3rd Friday count which was a huge success with 95% of our student body all present!

This year we did do things differently where all our students were able to walk away with a small prize while also doing hourly raffles for each grade and one big grand prize for the last hour of the day which was a 40in tv.

Below are pictures of all of our winners today. Thank you to all families who helped make sure your student was present today.

This week, our students from Mrs. Alex “Pītāpanūhkiw” Corn, Mr. Bryant “Aptey” Doud, & Mrs. Kataniee “Kata” Shawanokasics’ Menominee Language & Culture Classes processed the manōmaeh (wildrice) they harvested.

Our students immersed themselves into the final process of obtaining the edible version our ancestors survived of off for thousands of years.

This labor intensive process included; parching over wood fire, dancing on the rice, winnowing, ultimately removing the husk, connecting through singing & drumming, learning other ways to incorporate it into cooking, & creating cattail mats our relatives used for the processing stages.

Menominee Language Words Utilized:

Pawāham - he/she gathers rice
Pahnāēw - he/ she roasts it
Pīhkawāēqtaw - he/she breaks its shell
Pōskāqtam - he/she winnows it
Pēnaqtaw - he/she cleans it
Mēcehsow - he/she eats
