🌲LARK’IN AROUND, THE BIG CITY🎄

Ok ok, it’s past the holiday season, but my tree is still up and so are our expectations. delivered, as always, for Jaime & Jon’s trip to Windy City.

“My baby is 10 months now, and we have been wearing him since he was a few weeks old. I started in a solly wrap, and then graduated to the Hope & Plum Lark when he was a bit bigger. It is truly been his safe space and made running errands, adventuring, and napping on to go so much easier!

I had a private virtual consulting session with Trish to help me with getting the hang of making the switch to back carrying, and it was wonderful! She talked me through all of the adjustments, the mechanics of where my baby’s weight falls, and how to get him on and off worry free. We even practiced with a doll so I could “get it” before practicing again with the babe. I’m so much more comfortable now & my baby is happier being able to see out into the world!”

Here’s to many more adventures for Ozzy (and those amazing boots!)

🏔️ ADVENTURES IN ASHEVILLE ⛰️

"I love my onbuhimo, and it's all thanks to Trish. Carrying my son on my back is so convenient, whether I'm doing laundry or we're out on a hike. He loves being able to look out over my shoulder while still being close to me. I was completely overwhelmed by the high back carry, until Trish walked me through it. Now I'm a pro!"

The onbuhimo (pronounced OHN-bu-he-mo) is a Japanese style carrier without a waste band- simply two straps and a panel! These carriers are only for use with babies who are able to sit unassisted, so they are not recommended for use under 6 months of age. The beauty of an onbuhimo is its simplicity. Many of the options sold today offer shoulder adjustments, or panels that cinch (to narrow the seat for a smaller baby), but the idea is generally always the same- two straps and a panel, just like your favorite backpack!

Molly is absolutely rocking this beautiful Under the Leaves pattern onbuhimo by LennyLamb . Her fit is great, and enables her curious son to see right over her shoulders. I, for one, can't wait to see more of their adventures.

If you wait for the day that your child isn’t quite so wiggly, or the day you find the “perfect” wrap… you’ll never start. Woven wraps are a labor of love, but they are also the most customizable carrier on the market. They come in many sizes (swipe to find your base size), materials, and colors. They can be made to fit nearly any caregiver, any child, and there are more wrap carries than you can count. Woven wraps can also be safely and comfortably used from the newborn stage through toddlerhood, which makes them a great long term investment.

Start today, with what you have. Practice makes progress. 🌱 🌻

This weekend, I chose to brave the Parks Legado Farmers Market with my favorite Didymos woven wrap, a seasonal iced coffee, and trembling hands.

You see, as much as I enjoy woven wraps, they can be intimidating. I often find myself reaching for a faster solution when we are out and about- something with premade straps, or buckles. Quick ups make a world of difference in a busy parking lot (and I am so grateful for that!). The beauty of a farmers market is that it’s meant to be perused- best enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Why rush through a beautiful Saturday morning?

We started our day off in a double hammock carry with a nice twisted finish. Neither here nor there, things go well for a while but eventually my child does as all children do, and he begins to get tired (and cranky). Outdoor events can be overstimulating, especially for small babies. It was just as he began to wiggle and wry (and my car was just a bit too far to grab my onbuhimo) that I remembered something I learned through my Center for Babywearing Studies foundations class.. Enter, the Slip Knot Hip Carry.

Generally, you’d complete this with a “shorty” wrap- a 2, or a 3. There are several ringless finish options, but today this was my saving grace of choice. While a size 6 woven may have been a bit lengthy for the task at hand, in just minutes my son went from a toddler tantrum to asleep against me… and close enough to kiss. It is especially in dilemmas like this that I appreciate the versatility and simplicity of woven wraps. They can be slings, or front carries, belly bands, back carries, scarves, or even makeshift blankets.

In the wave of excitement that is a child who seems to be growing faster than even time can tell, I am appreciative of these little moments where I’m reminded that my baby is still just that. Today, I thank my woven wrap…. Just maybe, I’ll reach for you more often.

But, why?

I get this question a lot. Honestly? A lot of reasons, but mostly it’s this: Because I can, and because, well, I couldn’t (at first).

We left our friends and family behind when my husband got a job offer that was a bit of a “light at the end of the tunnel” for us… the problem with leaving behind your village, is that you don’t realize how badly you need them until you’re sitting on the kitchen floor sobbing because you’re SO hungry, but your partner is working and you can’t put the baby (or the pump) down long enough to make yourself a meal that didn’t come out of a box.

I was poorly educated in babywearing, but I read enough to know the basics- close enough to kiss, M shape, protect the airway.. all stuff I’d learned during those last few sleepless weeks of pregnancy. At first, my husband helped me because I was too scared I’d drop our son. Over time, I got more comfortable.. suddenly I was putting on my secondhand ring sling all by myself! And, (very) slowly, I gained back the ability to do things that I needed, without sacrificing my baby’s natural need to be held- cook a simple meal, fold laundry, walk the dogs. I don’t believe, though, that I was truly confident in my abilities until I was maybe 4-5 months postpartum. There are no classes here in West Texas- no workshops, no babywearing groups, no postpartum support that will teach you the cheat code that is a stretchy wrap, a ring sling, a buckle carrier, etc.

I do this because I want to be the person I needed when I was struggling to feel like I could ever be myself again. I never knew that I could get back to the things I love with a baby safely in tow, at least not for a long time. Yet, here we are, fishing, while our son dozes off in our favorite onbhuhimo.

Every single caregiver needs a free hand, and I’m here to be your helping hand along the way.

👑 CARRIED THROUGH THE KINGDOM 👑

“It was so nice having her on my back and not having to deal with a stroller in the ren faire crowds. I got a lot of compliments on my baby backpack and it was fun to coordinate our Limas Flex with my outfit. It was my first time doing a back carry for an extended period of time, so it was a bit scary (especially in the summer heat) but with Trish’s help adjusting and troubleshooting our fit, I had a lot more confidence and we both loved it!”

There are so many carriers, and no reason at all to get discouraged if one doesn’t immediately click with you and your baby. Alli came to me looking for a carrier that would work best for her lifestyle, and she had tried several options (we love a good lending library!) before settling on the Stokke Limas Flex- now she has a carrier that feels comfortable for both her and baby, which allows her to do the things she loves with her little girl in tow. AT A GLANCE: A brief Original carrier review

This weekend, we stumbled upon Kermit Celebration Days- a multi day festival in a small West Texas Town. Thanks to the generosity of a complete stranger, we were able to add this Happy Baby Original (commonly referred to as the “OG”) to our learning library.

The carrier I’m using above is the color “Jet”, and what the community refers to as an “old fit”. Happy Baby has made a few small changes over the years, but to my knowledge they are all very popular- and now I see why! My first impression is that the carrier feels well made without being too bulky or heavy. Leg openings are padded (which we love for the comfort of tiny humans) and the shoulder straps are padded as well (which helps make it comfortable for caregivers). This particular carrier is 100% linen, which means it was fairly breathable and comfy even on sweltering Texas day.

It was easy to accomplish a back carry with a simple hip scoot, and the buckle system is nearly effortless to use. It was surprisingly comfortable to tote around our 20 lb son for the duration of the trip, which I did not expect. This is my first time using an apron style carrier, and I can certainly appreciate how easy it is to achieve a good seat as well as how comfortable the fabric-only waistband is.

FINAL VERDICT: This will not be the last time we reach for the HBC OG. I’m hoping that in the near future I’ll be able to obtain a “new” fit so I can give that a try as well- I expect great things!
