Today is the day!
Arrival starts at 8:35 each morning.
School starts at 9:00am
Make sure you have a routine in place for getting to school on time every day.

Reminder: any student arriving after 9:00 AM must be escorted into the building by a parent/guardian and signed in at the office. This ensures students are supervised at all times and helps our attendance clerks maintain accurate records. There is no outside supervision after 9:00 AM, so please accompany your child if they are late.

It's the last week of our Summer Reading Challenge! Week 11!

Hopefully you've finished or almost finished with your reading journal. When you're finished, email a picture or scan of the reading journal to Mr. Olson at [email protected] and earn a prize.

Don't forget to also bring your completed KCLS reading journal to the KCLS library for a prize.

Each week Mr. Olson has given a challenge theme for inspiration and ideas for your students' reading. These are not a required reading list, just recommendations.

How does afternoon car pickup work at Horizon?

We have systems in place to ensure a smooth and safe afternoon pickup for our buses, walkers, and car riders.
If you are picking up a student by car, here are a few reminders to help keep our car pickup running smoothly and efficiently.

-Lanes fill in order, starting with lane 1 on the left side of the main driveway (blue on the map), then lane 2 on the left side of the middle parking area (yellow), then lane 3 on the right side of the middle area (green), then any others will back-in park in the upper parking lot (pink).
-Lanes are dismissed in order after busses depart, first lane 1, then lane 2, 3, and back-in parking.
-Cars pull around to H-A-W-K-S lane. Pickup is airport-style.
-Stay to the left to travel through the lane and pull to the right at the designated sign for pickup. When done with pickup, move back to the left lane to travel.
-Crosswalks are closed at dismissal, please use the path around the parking lot (orange line) if you need to park and walk in.
-Parking on the left or right side of the school building is for authorized vehicles only. Do not park or block the area unless you have specific authorization.

-Drivers and other adults should always stay in the car, do not get out of the car to load. If drivers or adults need to get out of car to load, please use the upper parking lot and walk in to pick up your student.
-Pay attention to staff in orange vests, stay off of phones while driving
-Do not block the bus pathways, buses take priority and will depart first. Buses will honk if you are blocking the way.
-When at your designated H-A-W-K-S pickup spot, pull all the way to the curb, do not block the travel lane on the left.
-When parking in lanes 1, 2, and 3, pull forward as far as possible, don't leave gaps between cars or space in front of you.

4th and 5th graders we are gearing up again for Battle of the Books!

4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to read from the list of 10 books through the year. Later in the year students form a team of up to 4 students from their class. Then, at the end of the year, teams compete in Battle of the Books by answering questions from each of the books. The final round of competition is a district competition where winning teams from each of the KSD elementary schools compete for the district trophy.

Here are the Battle of the Books selections for the 26-27 school year! These books were hand-picked by KSD librarians.

All these books will be available at the Horizon library, and they are also available as eBook and Audiobook from the King County Library System.

How does morning car drop-off work at Horizon?

We have systems in place to ensure a smooth and safe morning drop-off for our buses, walkers, and car riders.

If you are dropping a student off by car, here are a few reminders to help keep our car drop-off running smoothly and efficiently.

-Drivers and other adults should always stay in the car, do not get out of the car to unload. If drivers or adults need to get out of car to unload, please use the upper parking lot and walk your students in.
-Pay attention to staff in orange vests, stay off of phones while driving
-Make sure students are ready to get out of the car when it is unloading time
-Pull forward as far as possible, don't leave gaps between cars or space in front of you.

-Follow the Red, Yellow, and Green unloading zones.
-Car drop-off is not allowed in the Bus Lane, all car drop -off is in the middle area of the parking lot
Red: no unloading before the main crosswalk.
Yellow: unload with staff permission.
Green, unload after the second cross walk, pull all the way forward.

-Pull forward as far as possible in the green unloading zone, don't stop in the yellow zone or green zone when there is space in front of you.

Our first day of school for 1st through 5th graders is Wednesday, August 26.
9:00am - 3:40 pm
Students may arrive as early as 8:35am.
School starts at 9am
Unlike other Wednesdays, the first day of school will be a FULL SCHOOL DAY with dismissal at 3:40pm.
Kindergarteners will start on Monday, August 31.

Late Arrivals:
