Free Fishing Weekend starts today! Today and tomorrow, New York residents and non-residents can fish for free without a fishing license. All other regulations remain in effect.
New York State has an abundance of fishing opportunities, which are the result of a tremendous natural resource base, a caring public, and dedicated fisheries scientists across the state who assess and monitor fish populations, maintain and improve habitat conditions, and raise and stock fish into appropriate waters.

Erika Stoddard is one such fisheries professional. Erika has a degree in Fisheries Science and has worked as a creel technician on Chittenango and Ninemile Creeks and on Chinook salmon on Lake Ontario. For the past 6 years, Erika has worked as a fish culturist at the Oneida Hatchery, where she primarily raises walleyes and lake sturgeon. Erika also loves to work at the New York State Fair--you might see her in the Aquarium Building this year!

Gillom Kersey, 9, of Baldwinsville, holds up a nice steelhead he landed last fall on the Douglaston Salmon Run on the Salmon River. His father, Chris Kersey wrote: "I was so proud watching his 5-minute battle with this massive fish and very relieved he didn't loose his pole like head did a month prior to a walleye on Oneida Lake with his PopPop (what he calls his grandpa)."

Find out where and when trout are being stocked in New York this spring. DEC is stocking 1.8 million catchable trout in waters across the state. In addition to larger size fish being stocked this year, some stream reaches will receive four stockings of trout: bit.ly/OdoMdQ

New York State is reminding anglers to stay smart when fishing:

🎣Socially distance;
🎣Mask up when you cannot maintain social distancing, especially in parking lots and along footpaths;
🎣Avoid sharing gear when possible;
🎣Respect your fellow anglers and the resource by providing space and practicing ethical angling; and
🎣Take out what you bring in or place trash in receptacles.
