Back-to-school time is here! To help parents manage the rush, we’ve put together a short list of practical tips.
- Move wake-up times back gradually—about 15 minutes earlier each day for 3–4 weeks—to make mornings less hectic.
- Tour your child’s school before day one: walk the halls and locate the cafeteria and classrooms so the layout feels familiar.
- Ready your child’s AAC device and any sensory supports ahead of time to help transitions go more smoothly.
- Create a one-page profile (or ask your child’s BCBA to prepare one) and share it with teachers and staff to highlight their needs.
- Practice Functional Communication (FCT) for requests like “break,” “help,” and “more” to set your child up for success in class.
We know getting ready for school can be tiring—if you need support, we’re here for you!
