Our Bonsai for Intermediates wiring workshop is back at our nursery in Kent on November 21st from 11am - 1pm.

We go over the art of wiring a bonsai tree and will focus on anchoring techniques, wiring applications, wiring techniques, styling techniques, and you get hands on feeling on the power of each of the gauges from 1mm to 5mm.

Then you'll work on a completely untrained 8 year old Ficus Retusa tropical tree and will have freedom to prune and style as you please. Every participants' tree will look so different from one another.

- Your instructors are Robert Cho and his son Nolan Cho. Robert has 45+ years of bonsai and penjing experience and Nolan was born into the business.

- We are a small family business located in Kent, Wa.

- All of our trees come with a courtesy donation-based Bonsai Day Care service. If you travel out of town and need someone to water your bonsai tree, simply bring it back to our nursery in Kent, WA and we'll take care of your tree for you!

- We source quality trees to be used in our classes. All of the trees we provide are free of insects and diseases and have been fully acclimated to the PNW weather.

- We believe the art of bonsai should be accessible to everyone. The learning doesn't stop at the end of class. All participants can come back to our nursery in Kent with any questions or future care like wiring, repotting, restyling, etc.

One of our customers did the wiring for this mugo pine and brought it in to us because he got stuck while designing the tree and didn't know how to move forward. Robert pulled out the white board and drew out how he'd reposition some branches and how to pot it up. His vision is to turn this one tree into a forest planting. What do you think?

This is probably one of the largest if not the largest Japanese maple tree we've ever pruned. We did a full detail real-time pruning of a section of this tree a couple videos back so if you want to learn some techniques, you can check that out here

So many people get stuck on the 30% rule where they were taught to never prune more than 30% of the tree. This 30% rule does not apply to maples and in fact doesn't apply to most trees. This 30% rule stemmed from a handful of fragile tree species, most notably the black pine and hemlock species. Arborists are taught this 30% rule because it's a safe rule that can be applied to EVERY tree species. Japanese maple trees can and should be pruned pretty significantly. This is why the trees across Asia are so incredible because this pruning technique has been done for over a thousand years.
