Hello, Sunnycrest!
Thank you for coming out last week for Open House to meet teachers, get to know what your kids are learning this year. We love every opportunity possible to connect and to learn together, so we hope to see you at Sunnycrest more often! In fact, this year, we plan on hosting a reading night, math games night, International Night, and Science Day as our 4 big family engagement events. As we get closer to those dates, we’ll share more details.
This Friday will be our first Coffee with the Principal. This year, we’ll be partnering with Thomas Jefferson High School to rotate hosting locations. Our goal has always been to build a vertical pathway where schools and families who attend across all schools can be in communication with leadership from all buildings. We are so excited for this to happen starting this school year.
Last week, we also had our first Scholar Advisory. We got to hear from representatives from each class across grades 2-5 about the things that are going well, the things that could use improvement, and sharing suggestions back to class with their teachers and peers. One of the most prevalent was the need for students to engage more with Kelso’s choices. Scholar Advisory names that sometimes kids know what the choices are, but do not engage with it by choice, which is what causes conflicts to continue. Take a moment to review this at home and ask your child what they know about Kelso!

If you are wondering what your child is eating each day, please take a look at this link as it will provide you with the menu for breakfast and lunch. Additionally, starting next week we will have Fresh Fruits and Vegetables, a program sponsored by the USDA. This program is meant for kids to try out different fruits or vegetables Mondays - Thursdays of each week. Family Center:
Want another reason to come check out our family center? Come by and visit, write your child a letter, and we’ll make sure it’s delivered! We recently received a donation from Lowe’s to set this up. Our goal is to have kid mail for every student this year! If you are free to come in and write one for your child and possibly another, we plan to put together a stash from volunteers to get one to every Roadrunner!

¡Hola, Sunnycrest!
Gracias por asistir la semana pasada a la jornada de puertas abiertas (*Open House*) para conocer a los maestros y saber qué están aprendiendo sus hijos este año. Nos encanta cualquier oportunidad para conectar y aprender juntos, ¡así que esperamos verlos más a menudo en Sunnycrest! De hecho, este año planeamos organizar una noche de lectura, una noche de juegos matemáticos, una Noche Internacional y un Día de la Ciencia como nuestros cuatro grandes eventos de participación familiar. Compartiremos más detalles a medida que se acerquen las fechas.
Este viernes tendremos nuestro primer "Café con el Director". Este año, colaboraremos con la escuela secundaria Thomas Jefferson High School para alternar las sedes de estos encuentros. Nuestro objetivo siempre ha sido crear una trayectoria continua en la que las familias de todas las escuelas puedan comunicarse con el equipo directivo de los distintos centros educativos. Nos entusiasma mucho poner esto en marcha a partir de este año escolar.
La semana pasada también celebramos nuestra primera reunión del Consejo de Estudiantes (*Scholar Advisory*). Escuchamos a representantes de cada clase de los grados 2.º a 5.º hablar sobre lo que funciona bien y lo que podría mejorarse, además de compartir sugerencias con sus maestros y compañeros. Uno de los temas más recurrentes fue la necesidad de que los estudiantes apliquen más las estrategias de "Kelso’s Choices" (las opciones de Kelso). Los miembros del consejo señalaron que, a veces, los niños conocen las opciones pero deciden no ponerlas en práctica, lo que provoca que los conflictos continúen. ¡Tómese un momento para repasar esto en casa y pregúntele a su hijo qué sabe sobre Kelso!

Si desea saber qué come su hijo cada día, consulte este enlace para ver el menú de desayuno y almuerzo. Además, a partir de la próxima semana contaremos con el programa de Frutas y Verduras Frescas, patrocinado por el USDA. El objetivo de este programa es que los niños prueben diferentes frutas o verduras de lunes a jueves cada semana. Centro Familiar:
¿Quiere otra razón para visitar nuestro centro familiar? ¡Venga a visitarnos, escriba una carta a su hijo y nosotros nos aseguraremos de que se la entreguen! Recientemente recibimos una donación de Lowe’s para poner en marcha esta iniciativa. ¡Nuestra meta es que todos los estudiantes reciban correo dirigido a ellos este año! Si tiene tiempo para venir y escribir una carta para su hijo —y tal vez otra más—, planeamos recopilar mensajes de voluntarios para asegurarnos de que cada "Roadrunner" reciba uno.
