Serving the adult learner, parenting, and military-connected student populations at Kent State University!

Kent State offers special programs and services just for adult and veteran students. Taking the next step toward your educational or career goals can sometimes seem overwhelming, so the Center of Adult and Veteran Services makes it a little easier. We provide support and information to assist you in transition to college and throughout your education at Kent State University. You’ll receive personalized, comprehensive support tailored to your needs, whether you are entering college for the first time or returning after a career in business or service in the armed forces. Services Available:
• Adult Student Orientation- This one credit hour orientation course helps adult students adjust to the academic environment and add the role of student to their other life responsibilities. This course meets the requirements for the First Year Experience Course and is valuable to all adult students new to KSU. Contact the office for more information.
• General academic advising and assistance.
• Career Guidance
• We provide an updated list of local child care providers, and an environment to help single parents or families deal with both the personal and academic issues faced in college.
• Campus involvement, such as the KSU Vets Club
• Any other additional referrals or resources students may need assistance with

Whether you're returning to school after time away, balancing classes with work or family, a parent, a veteran, or simply on a path that looks a little different, we want to hear from you!

We've created a short survey to learn more about your interests, needs, and preferences. Your responses will help us better serve non-traditional students and build a stronger sense of community on campus. We're exploring ideas like an online group or a student organization where non-traditional students can connect, share experiences, and support one another. 💙💛

🏛️ Welcome to KENTHACA! ⚓

This Homecoming Week, the CAVS office set sail for ancient Greece and became Ithaca, home of the legendary Odysseus! 🌊

For the Homecoming office decorating contest, every office brought this year's theme, "Every Flash Has a Story," to life. We chose The Odyssey, because it's the story of a war veteran trying to find his way home. 🛡️

After 10 years at war in Troy, Odysseus spent another 10 years sailing home. Along the way he faced storms, monsters, wrong turns, and plenty of people telling him he'd never make it. But he kept going, relying on his wit, his resilience, and the people who helped him along the way. ⛵

Our veterans, military-connected students, and adult learners know what it means to take the long road. Many of you are balancing service, family, work, and school, and coming back to the classroom after time away can feel like its own odyssey. Like Odysseus, every one of you has a story worth telling, and CAVS is here to help you navigate the journey. Your Ithaca is the finish line, and we'll help you get there. 🎓

Kent State CAVS is sharing the following opportunity on behalf of the Cincinnati Bengals and Ohio CAT:

The Cincinnati Bengals are proud to be partnering with Ohio CAT to present the Ohio CAT Military Scholarship Essay Contest – an opportunity to recognize and support military members and veterans as they pursue their educational goals.

Applications are officially open, and we would greatly appreciate your help sharing this opportunity throughout the active military and veteran communities. Through this program, two deserving military members or veterans will each receive a $5,000 scholarship, along with four tickets to the Salute to Service game on Sunday, November 1st featuring the Cincinnati Bengals vs. Tennessee Titans.

To enter, applicants must submit an essay of 750 words or fewer addressing how their military service has prepared them to excel academically and pursue their future goals. Essays will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

Originality & Communication (40%): Essays should present a clear and compelling message, supported by meaningful detail and strong organization.
Content (40%): Essays should highlight the entrant's military service, educational and career aspirations, and the steps they are taking to achieve those goals.
Writing Mechanics (20%): Essays should demonstrate strong spelling, grammar, punctuation, and overall writing quality, and should not exceed the 750-word limit.

Eligibility Requirements:

Active-duty, retired, and veteran military personnel are eligible to apply.
Veterans pursuing higher education are eligible – regardless of length of service.
Current ROTC participants are not eligible for this scholarship program.

Applications can be submitted online at https://www.bengals.com/fans/promotions/scholarship. Submissions will remain open through Friday, October 9th at 11:59PM EST.

🕊️ National POW/MIA Recognition Day — September 18, 2026

This Friday, we pause to honor the American prisoners of war and those still missing in action, along with the families who have carried their absence for decades. First proclaimed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, this day has grown into a national tradition observed every third Friday of September.

Unlike memorials tied to a single branch or conflict, POW/MIA Recognition Day stands for every unaccounted for service member across all U.S. wars, a reminder that "you are not forgotten" is more than a motto.

To the veterans and military-connected students in our Kent State community: we see you, we honor your service, and we honor those who never made it home.

🐿️🏈 IT'S A FAMILY-FRIENDLY WEEKEND ON CAMPUS! Sept. 25–26

Kent State's Parents & Families Appreciation Weekend is happening Sept. 25–26, a weekend built around celebrating the students in our lives, from cherished traditions to Saturday's football game as the Golden Flashes take on Ball State. 🏈💙

Registration for the full weekend package closed back on Sept. 4 — but don't worry if you didn't sign up! There's still plenty happening that weekend that anyone can join:

🆓 FREE & OPEN TO ALL (no registration required) 🐿️ 44th Annual Black Squirrel Fest: Fri, Sept. 25, 4–7 p.m., Risman Plaza & Student Green. Free food, music, and activities for the whole family, plus the first 500 students get a free tee!

💳 OPEN TO ALL, BUT PAID (a la carte — you don't have to be registered for the weekend to take part) 🎨 Parents & Families Paint Night: $40/person, guests of all ages welcome ✈️ Aeronautics & Engineering Expo at the Kent State Airport: $10/family or car, hands-on STEM, aircraft displays, and a 16-plane flyover 🏈 Football tickets: Golden Flashes vs. Ball State, Saturday at noon

Did you know? 🌻🎸 Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) celebrates the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the United States.

Here at Kent State, that history is part of our own campus story. Close to 1,000 Hispanic or Latino students call Kent State home, bringing their traditions, languages, and perspectives to every corner of our university.

CAVS is proud to celebrate and support our Hispanic and Latino adult and veteran students this month and every month. 💛

Veteran su***de rates are roughly 1.5 times higher than the civilian population, and recent Department of Veterans Affairs data shows rates continuing an upward trend. This information comes from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

🛩️ 25 Years Later: Honoring the Day Aviation Changed Forever 🇺🇸

This September marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 attacks. For a generation of Kent State aviation alumni, that day didn't just change history. It changed the course of their lives.

Brian Hodor, '01, was a flight instructor at Kent State Airport that morning. After 9/11, he shifted his path toward military service, earning his Air Force wings, flying C-130s, and becoming a squadron commander. Today he flies as a 737 captain for United Airlines while continuing to serve in the Air Force Reserve. ✈️

His story, along with those of fellow alumni Richard "Reb" Benson, Jim Sebastian, and Dan Wolfe, reminds us how many in aviation answered the call to serve their country, and how deeply linked our Golden Flashes community is to the men and women who wear the uniform.

📅 On Sept. 10, the College of Aeronautics and Engineering will hold its 5th Annual Pilot Pinning Ceremony at the Kent State University Airport (1G3), commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11 while celebrating the next generation of Kent State pilots earning their wings.

To the veterans and service members who carry this legacy forward: we see you, we honor you, and we thank you. 🎖️
