In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Equity and Inclusion Office, with help from students and Kent SoHBU, put together a Chapel celebrating Hispanic culture. Students shared readings and a dance, and welcomed alum Paula Lanius ’23 back to campus to share a Chapel Talk.

Paula shared her story of coming to Kent from the Dominican Republic and finding her place in a new community. She reflected on the people and experiences that shaped her and the importance of bringing where you come from into wherever you’re going.

Thank you, Paula, for returning to campus and sharing your story with the Kent community. 💙

Students in Mr. Lagor's Advanced Studies Environmental Science took their learning outside the classroom to investigate the water chemistry of the Housatonic River. 🌊

Using water samples from the river, students measured pH, temperature, alkalinity, and dissolved oxygen to better understand the conditions that support aquatic life. Their results showed that the river provides a healthy environment for a diverse ecosystem, including the fish and other organisms that call the Housatonic home.

At Thursday’s Chapel, Senior Prefect Norah Z. ’27 reflected on how Kent has become a home away from home over the last four years and encouraged the community to make the most of the “firsts,” rather than focusing on the “lasts.”

Norah encouraged students to take risks, try new things, make mistakes, and fully experience their time at Kent. For seniors, she urged them to enjoy this final year, while reminding underclassmen that there’s no need to rush. “This place will provide you with so much; you just have to look for it.”

“Your life and your experiences are what you make of it.”
