Our Master of Architecture, Master of Landscape Architecture, and Master of Urban Design students located at our Cleveland Studios and the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative gave their final presentations of the Index Studio. Under the guidance of Diane Davis Sikora, this graduate studio investigates new frameworks for urban repair and ecological remediation within Cleveland’s post-industrial landscape. Through a comparative lens, the students explored two distinct biomes - Cleveland’s mixed forest ecosystem and the semi-arid landscapes of Mexico City and Querétaro - uncovering shared challenges and innovative strategies for recovery.
Their work focuses on the persistence of soil and water toxicity, addressing decades of industrial impact through design approaches that unfold over time - not as singular solutions, but as phased processes of regeneration. From retrofitting infrastructures to imagining adaptive forms of habitation, we question how architecture can actively participate in healing environments suspended between contamination and renewal.
Through research, indexing, and design speculation, students developed proposals that operate across scales - from city systems to material assemblies - emphasizing resilience, adaptability, and care.
