🌸 Our STEP program students had a fantastic work-based learning experience at Howland Flowers 🌸

They learned the ins and outs of a flower shop—processing fresh deliveries, trimming stems and leaves, placing the flowers in plant food, creating and wrapping arrangements for cold-weather delivery, keeping the shop tidy, and even making pinecone picks.

Thank you to this wonderful local business for welcoming our students and providing such a hands-on learning opportunity!

“The SAFER program was founded by the Kenosha Police Department and is designed to assist individuals with cognitive disabilities and mental health diagnoses, such as autism, personality disorders, intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, and other related conditions. These disabilities can affect communication, memory, decision-making, and reactions in certain situations. The program provides law enforcement with key information to help officers better understand and respond to these individuals, promoting improved communication and de-escalation techniques.”

S.A.F.E.R. – Specialized Alerts For Enhanced Response

“To Strengthen and Serve our Community by Putting People First.”

The Kenosha Police Department is proud to offer the S.A.F.E.R. program, a proactive effort to improve safety and communication between law enforcement and individuals with special needs during emergency calls.

📋 How It Works:
When an emergency involves a registered individual, officers receive a “SAFER” alert with key information such as:
✔️ The individual's condition
✔️ Potential triggers
✔️ Effective de-escalation techniques
✔️ Emergency contact information
✔️ Photos for quick identification

This vital info helps our officers respond with compassion, understanding, and the tools they need to ensure everyone’s safety.
