That was my twin brother César’s response when I told him we had collected about $10K in donations for the relief effort following the double earthquake in Venezuela.

César is the reason I started practicing Aikido more than 20 years ago. He's no longer active on the mat, but he's still an aikidoka in philosophy and approach to life, which says something about the character of those who choose this art.

On June 24th, Venezuela suffered two devastating earthquakes within seconds of each other. The death toll continues to rise, with thousands killed, tens of thousands injured, tens of thousands displaced, and widespread building damage across Caracas and La Guaira.

This devastation sent waves of solidarity around the world. Many of us looked for ways to help from wherever we were. That's why six Venezuelan instructors — from Aikido Miramar (FL), Florida Aikikai (FL), Capital Aikido of Wisconsin (WI), and Kenosha Aikikai (WI) — organized, in a matter of minutes, a special class to raise funds for those affected.
Everyone involved had already said "yes" before the question was even asked.

Erwin Lares Sensei and Emmanuel Herzog Sensei agreed to hold the event in less than an hour, then asked Peter and Penny Bernath Shihan if it could be hosted at their beautiful Florida Aikikai dojo.
Donations started coming in immediately. By the time we gathered in Florida, we'd already passed $2,000 — I was thrilled. Then, by the time the event actually started, we'd reached $5,000, with more than 40 people on the mat, some traveling from out of state to join us.

The presence, the energy, and especially the generosity of our Aikido community were deeply moving. Six Venezuelan aikidoka came together to offer a way to help our fellow countrymen by sharing our own Aikido experience, but the real lesson wasn't in the techniques we showed. It was in the hearts of everyone who attended, who donated, who is making a real difference in the lives of people they'll likely never meet.

Special thanks to Peter and Penny Sensei and the members of Aikido Florida Aikikai for being such gracious hosts. My gratitude also to my fellow instructors — Isa, Emma (Aikido Miramar), Erwin Capital Aikikai of Wisconsin), Omar (Aikido Florida Aikikai), and Ricardo (Aikido Miramar) — for making this possible, to my teacher Rock Lazo Sensei for his steady support and encouragement, and to all of you who donated, attended, or shared the posts to pass along the word in less than two weeks.
