Meet Frances Conkle, a Kennesaw State University student researcher in the College of Science and Mathematics! 🔬

This summer, Frances participated in KSU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Program, where she studied a hormone receptor in fruit flies that plays an important role in regulating growth and development. Because fruit flies share many genes with humans, research like Frances’ could ultimately help scientists better understand how similar biological processes work in people.

Meet the researcher using engineering to explore new possibilities for human health! ❤️‍🩹

Kennesaw State University Assistant Professor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Razvan Chris Voicu from the Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Engineering Technology and his students are exploring how emerging technologies can be used to address challenges in biomedical engineering, including the use of 3D printing to create tissue-like structures for the human body.

By bringing engineering and medicine together, Voicu’s work could help advance the development of new biomedical technologies and approaches to improving human health.

Meet Kennesaw State University Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dylan Gaines from the College of Computing and Software Engineering.

Gaines is developing brain-computer technology to help people with severe motor impairments communicate faster and more independently. By combining brain-signal detection with predictive text, his system could reduce the number of steps it takes users to turn their thoughts into words.

“The main problem is communication rate,” Gaines said. “Some systems can be as slow as one to three words per minute, while the average speaking rate is around 150 words per minute.”

This week in research history, George Eastman patented a camera designed to use roll film, helping make photography more accessible to everyday people without extensive training.

More than a century later, Kennesaw State University researchers from the College of Computing and Software Engineering, Mahmut Karakaya and Ramazan Aygun, are finding new ways to use the cameras we carry every day. By combining smartphone technology with machine learning, they’re developing a system for at-home retinal imaging that could reduce costs and the need for in-person doctor’s visits.

The Office of Research at Kennesaw State University (KSU) was thrilled to welcome a wonderful group of students and staff from the Fulton Innovation Academy to the new Robin and Doug Shore Innovation Center last week for an interactive day of research and discovery!

The day kicked off with a panel led by KSU student researchers and Executive Director of Undergraduate Research Dr. Amy Buddie. From there, students explored the building through both guided and self-guided tours, wrapping up with research in action brought to us by Assistant Professor of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering Dr. Chris Voicu's lab. Students met the robot this lab is modifying to shape the future of healthcare, giving them a glimpse at the real-world impacts of research.

What’s behind each swipe on Tinder? 👀

In this episode of Research IRL, Makayla Thrash breaks down research from Kennesaw State University Associate Professor of Communication Minhao Dai in the Radow College of Humanities and Social Sciences to explore what makes someone swipe left or right on a dating profile.

Keep an eye out for our next episode in September! In the meantime, tell us in the comments: What’s one thing you always include in a dating profile?
