Where did our program get its namesake? Joel A. Katz was actually one of the most formidable entertainment attorneys in the entertainment industry and we have him to thank for the existence of our program today. Who was he? Keep scrolling to learn more (made by our student Jin).
So who was Joel A. Katz? He was one of the industry’s most formidable entertainment attorneys and deal makers in music and entertainment history. He represented a variety of high-profile artists and entertainment industry professionals - many of whom you’ve probably heard of.
His client list was quite long but just to name a few, his clients included James Brown, Willie Nelson, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Jamie Foxx, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Ludacris, Jimmy Buffet, Julio Iglesias, Little Big Town, TLC, Steve Harvey, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. He was named to Billboard Magazine’s “Power 100” list of the most influential executives in the music business. Looking at just a few of his clients you can see why!
His career started off with a bang. After he graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Law, he successfully represented James Brown in 1971, negotiating a deal with PolyGram.
He led some historic entertainment transactions such as the Sony / ATV Music Publishing $750 million acquisition of Michael Jackson’s legacy and negotiating a $600 million, 10 year agreement between the Recording Academy and CBS for the Grammy’s.
He was the founding chairman of Greenberg Traurig’s Global Entertainment and Media Practice and the founding shareholder of the Atlanta office where he practiced for nearly 25 years from 1998 through 2020. He helped transform Atlanta into one of the most important music business centers in the United States.
Billboard magazine has called him “the dean of the Atlanta entertainment industry” and named him its 2017 Lawyer of the Year. Also, in 2024, the Recording Academy presented Katz with its Trustees Award.
He consistently emphasized responsibility and dedicated his time and leadership to education and organizations supporting music, health, and community. As Ch
