Please help us in welcoming Dr. Maria Lungu, Assistant Professor of Public Administration!
Dr. Lungu recently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Digital Technology for Democracy lab at the University of Virginia. She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Tennessee College of Law, an MBA from Belmont University, and a PhD in public administration from Florida Atlantic University. She was previously a legal consultant at Stepping Stones International and worked for the Metropolitan Public Defender’s Office in Nashville. Dr. Lungu has also been honored as an Artificial Intelligence Ethics and Society (AIES) research fellow and as a member of the World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Alliance.
Dr. Lungu’s research examines the intersection of law, public administration, and artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on the use of emerging technologies in policing and the courts. Her work explores how AI shapes decision-making, administrative efficiency, and justice, as well as the broader sociotechnical implications of predictive policing. Her research has been published in Public Money & Management, the Journal of AI Law and Regulation, the Review of Black Political Economy, Administrative Theory & Praxis, and the American Journal of Qualitative Research, among other journals. Outside of the academic setting, Dr. Lungu enjoys learning how to cook foods from different cultures, pictures of golden retrievers, and more tennis than you can imagine.
