The New School Where Students Find Their Voice The New School is a state approved, democratic, community-based private high school in Kennebunk, Maine.

We keep our student-teacher ratio low, classes are hands-on, and students have opportunities to work on independent projects, apprenticeships, and intensive travel studies. All classes align to the Maine Learning Results, and we find fun, engaging, and creative ways to educate our students' mind, body, AND spirit. What makes a small school different?

Students have room to participate in conversations, explore their interests, build meaningful connections, and take an active role in shaping their education.

Being small also gives us the opportunity to know our students as individuals, understanding their strengths, interests, and the support they need.

It's about creating a school community where students are seen, heard, and encouraged to contribute.

📸 Learning photography by getting out and doing it.

Recently, TNS students interested in photography had the opportunity to spend the day with local photographer and artist Bruce King at a beautiful property in Cape Porpoise.

Students explored the property and coastline, tried their hand at nature photography. From flowers and gardens to the rocky shore it’s exactly the kind of experience we love to see: students getting the chance to take an interest and explore it out in the world. 🌿📷🌊

One of the things we want students to have at The New School is room to explore.
That's where Flex Friday comes in.
Flex Friday gives students opportunities to step outside their regular classes and participate in activities based on different interests and experiences.

It's another way student choice becomes part of learning at TNS. Students aren't only discovering what they're interested in, but also getting opportunities to actually try those interests out.

And sometimes, that's where a new interest begins. 💙

What has Marine Biology looked like at The New School this month? 🌊🦞
Students spent part of September along the rocky coast at Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk, exploring tide pools and searching for plankton as they investigated the marine ecosystems right in our own backyard.
This month also took them to the Wells Reserve at Laudholm, where they attended Meet the Scientists: Using Diving and Cameras to Understand Lobster Populations Throughout the Gulf of Maine.
Wells Reserve researchers Jason Goldstein and Ben Gutzler shared their work studying lobster populations using underwater cameras, dive surveys, and data collected throughout the Gulf of Maine. It gave students a chance to see how the questions they explore in Marine Biology connect directly to active scientific research.
From tide pools to a very up-close lobster encounter, September has been a pretty great month for learning by doing.
