BIG NEWS for Maine lobstermen!

The Northeast Lobsterman Protection Act of 2026 (H.R. 9436) has passed the U.S. House of Representatives, moving us one step closer to extending the pause on new whale rules through 2035 and giving scientists more time to build the data needed to get future regulations right.

🦞 Billion Egg Challenge Leaderboard: Week 9 🦞

Nine weeks in and Southern Maine Future Catch is still sitting pretty at the top with 23,970 V-notches and 239.7 MILLION eggs protected.

Downeast Tail Pinchers are holding onto second with 19,418 notches, while the Midcoast Notchmen aren’t waving the white flag yet at 17,807.

Altogether, Maine lobstermen have protected 611.95 MILLION eggs — 61.2% of the way to ONE BILLION!

We’re officially in the final stretch, so now’s not the time to get stingy with those notch reports. Every one counts—and there’s still plenty of time for a little leaderboard switchup!

What makes the Maine (or American) lobster, Homarus americanus a true lobster?

An invertebrate (meaning they do not have bones) that lives in the ocean, has 10 legs (8 walking, 2 claws), a protected and segmented body (carapace and tail) antennae and stalked eyes.

Their 10 legs (decapod) make it related to other familiar sea creatures like shrimp and crabs!
