Ready to grow your own fresh, healthy food but don't know where to start? The WSU Extension Master Gardeners in Cowlitz County’s Cowlitz Grows Raised Bed Program is here to help you dig in!

We believe everyone should have access to fresh produce and the skills to grow it. If selected for this amazing program, you won’t just get a garden—you’ll get a complete "starter kit" for success!

What’s included? ✨ A brand new raised garden bed ✨ Premium soil, seeds, and vegetable starts ✨ Hands-on gardening workshops ✨ Your very own Master Gardener mentor to guide you all season long!

Who can apply? This program is designed for Cowlitz County residents with limited incomes (at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level). No need to provide paperwork—income is self-reported!

Important Dates: 🗓 Deadline to Apply: March 13, 2026. Winners Announced: Early April. Requirement: Attend one 90-minute workshop to get your garden off to a great start!

RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE, now thru Jan. 4th, 2025. Christmas Trees Only. Tree bases must be six inches or less in diameter. Flocked trees must be taken to the Waste Control Transfer Station (minimal charge). Please remove tinsel, metal hooks, nails and lights. No stands, flocked or artificial trees.

A free raised bed could be yours!

How would you like to get a free raised bed that included soil and plant starts? Started in 2012, WSU Extension Master Gardeners promote vegetable gardening in Cowlitz County by giving away raised beds. Ten applicants will be selected to have a raised bed built for them.

Do you want to become an Extension Master Gardener?

This is a great opportunity to learn more about plants, meet great people, serve your community, but most of all, have a lot of fun. You will receive over 90 hours of training on all aspects of gardening.

The first step is to attend an orientation to find out more about the expectations and opportunities of the Extension Master Gardener program in Cowlitz County. Free orientation sessions discussing classes offered, volunteer activities, training schedule, and costs, will be offered on (only attend one):

- November 18 12:00 – 1:00 pm (Monday)
- November 26 10:00 – 11:00 am (Tuesday)
- December 6 10:00 – 11:00 am (Friday)
- December 10 2:00 – 3:00 pm (Tuesday)

Extension Master Gardener Training classes will be held in Longview every Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 pm from late January till early June.

On November 2, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm join the WSU Extension Master Gardeners for a leaf exchange at the Cowlitz County Fairgrounds (Washington Street Entrance).
Shredded leaves are an amazing organic amendment to put on your garden beds over the winter! Rake up and bag your leaves so gardeners and composters can put them to good use. Bagged leaves may be dropped off on the event day. Leaves only, please, no weeds. Those needing leaves should attend after 11:00 am. Leaves will be available for pickup on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last.

WSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers will be on hand to inspect material for drop off and help the event run smoothly. For questions about the event, contact Gary Fredricks at 360-577-3014, Ext 3 or email [email protected].
