In 1901, the first performance of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 in D, and No 2, by the Liverpool Orchestral Society. March No 1 is now commonly known in the United States as the Graduation March. It was first played in such a manner at Yale in 1905 where Elgar attended and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music.
