SPJ strongly objects to President Donald Trump’s decision to bar CNN, MS NOW and Politico from the White House because of their coverage. Trump announced the decision today in a Truth Social post, saying the ban was effective immediately.

Government officials should not decide which legitimate news organizations deserve access based on whether they approve of their reporting. A free press must be able to question those in power, report critically and serve the public without fear of retaliation.

This is about more than three newsrooms. It is about whether government access can be used as leverage over journalism.

The public needs journalists who can hold those in power accountable — without fear that access will be taken away for doing their jobs.
