Behind the Numbers launches tomorrow. 💜

Utah’s October 1 child care subsidy changes could affect an estimated 10,743 children. We’re going to make sure state leaders see the real children and working families behind that number.

From September 28 through October 9, families and providers across Utah will share their stories. Each child will be represented by an item based on their age:

🍼 A diaper for an infant or toddler
🥤 A sippy cup for a two-year-old
🎨 Play-Doh for a preschooler
🖍️ A drawing from a school-age child

Submit one response for each child, then one Working Family response for your household. We’ll print your responses to display with the items. You can also donate an item or help us purchase one, but you do not need to donate to participate. The form has the full instructions.

🚨 UTAH FAMILIES & CHILD CARE PROVIDERS — WE NEED YOU TONIGHT.

DWS has announced that new child care subsidy income eligibility guidelines will take effect October 1. These changes could price thousands of Utah children out of care and create even more pressure for working families and child care providers.

The Utah Community Coalition for Child Care is opening our weekly virtual meeting to the entire community tonight.

This isn't just an informational meeting. We are coming together to organize our collective power and decide what we do next.

You do not need to be a coalition member to attend. Parents, home providers, center owners, educators, advocates, business owners, elected officials, and community members — if you care about child care in Utah, there is a place for you in this conversation.

🚨 UTAH — WE NEED YOUR STORY NOW.

The Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS), through its Office of Child Care (OCC), has officially announced significant changes to child care assistance beginning October 1st.

Thousands of Utah families could be affected by changes to eligibility and subsidy payments.

If you currently receive child care assistance, we need to hear from you.

What would happen if you lost your subsidy or your assistance decreased? Could you afford child care? Would you have to reduce your hours, leave your job, or pull your child from care?

Child care providers: What would losing subsidized families or receiving reduced payments mean for your program, your staff, and your ability to continue providing care?

Business owners and employers: What happens to your business when employees can no longer afford the child care that allows them to work?

These decisions cannot just be numbers on a spreadsheet. Decision-makers need to see the real people, families, businesses, and child care programs behind those numbers.

The next OCC Advisory Committee meeting is September 9th.

School is almost upon us, and many of us are beginning to purchase new school clothes and go through closets to cycle out clothing that our children have outgrown.

As you clean out those closets and drawers, I am kindly asking you to consider donating any gently used children’s clothing to Brighter Steps. We would love to pass these items along to Brighter Steps families who may be able to use them.

Clothing that no longer fits your child could be exactly what another child needs as they prepare for the new school year. This is a simple way for our Brighter Steps community to support one another while giving gently loved clothing a second life.

If you have clean, gently used clothing that you would like to donate, please feel free to bring it to Brighter Steps.

🚨 Brighter Steps Families 🚨
We Need You!!!

I want to share something that could directly impact many of the families we serve.

State leaders have informed stakeholders that Utah is facing a $20 million reduction in federal Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) block grant funding. As they work through how to manage these cuts, several options are being discussed, including:

• Higher out-of-pocket copays for families receiving child care assistance.
• Lower income limits, meaning some families may no longer qualify for assistance.
• Reductions in funding for school-age child care.
• Lower reimbursement rates paid to child care providers.

What does this mean for Brighter Steps families?

For some families, it could mean paying significantly more for child care each month.

For others, it could mean losing child care assistance altogether because they no longer qualify.

Families with school-age children could see changes to the support they currently receive before school, after school, or during school breaks.

These decisions would not only affect families receiving assistance. They could impact the entire child care system by making it harder for providers to continue offering affordable, high-quality care and reducing the number of available child care options throughout our community.

No final decisions have been made, but this is exactly why we cannot wait until they are.

Your voice matters.

The people making these decisions need to hear from the parents whose lives will be affected. They need to understand that child care is not a luxury. It allows parents to work, children to learn, and families to build a better future.

This is our moment to stand together.

Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing more opportunities for us to rise up together, share our stories, and make sure the voices of Utah families are heard.

Today, the Brighter Steps team proudly showed up for Day Without Childcare to stand alongside providers, families, and advocates fighting for a childcare system that truly supports Utah families. ❤️

At Brighter Steps, we see every single day how essential childcare is to our communities. Childcare providers are the workforce behind the workforce. Without safe, reliable, and nurturing childcare, parents cannot work, businesses cannot function, and families are left carrying impossible burdens.

The reality is heartbreaking: Parents cannot afford to pay more. Providers cannot afford to charge less.

Childcare professionals dedicate their lives to caring for and educating children, yet many providers are struggling just to keep their doors open while families struggle to afford care. The system is broken, and it is time for meaningful change.

We are calling on Utah legislators to invest in Utah families by supporting affordable childcare, sustainable funding, and fair wages for the providers who care for our children every single day.

We are proud of our Brighter Steps staff for showing up, using their voices, and advocating for the children and families we serve. Change happens when communities come together, and today we stood together with purpose, passion, and hope for a better future for all families.
