Know the Difference Before You Ride!

Bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters are becoming more common across Kearney, and we want to help everyone stay safe while following local laws.

One important reminder: Not all electric bikes are considered e-bikes.

Some electric two-wheeled vehicles may resemble e-bikes but are actually electric motorcycles or off-road vehicles. Because they lack pedals, can reach higher speeds, and are regulated differently under the law, they are not considered e-bikes under City ordinance and are not permitted where bicycles and Class I–III e-bikes are allowed.

Under Ordinance No. 8766, the City of Kearney regulates where bicycles, Class I–III electric bicycles, and electric foot scooters may be operated on public streets, trails, and sidewalks. The ordinance also establishes safety requirements and prohibits careless or reckless operation.

The Kearney Police Department has created a helpful webpage explaining:
✅ Where bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters can be ridden
✅ The rules that apply to each
✅ Important safety tips
✅ The difference between e-bikes and electric motorcycles/off-road vehicles

Whether you're riding or your child is, taking a few minutes to understand the rules can help prevent accidents, injuries, and citations while keeping Kearney's streets, trails, and sidewalks safe for everyone.

A big moment happened yesterday as the first 2 of 7 aircraft arrived for our future Loper Flight Academy announcement.
We are excited to share this sneak peek as we prepare for what is ahead. This is an exciting step forward for our center and for the opportunities it will create for students and our community.

Last week, Mitchell led our Transit New Driver Bootcamp, focused on helping new transit drivers build confidence through hands-on learning.

Mitchell brings a practical and engaging approach to training. Drivers do not just sit and listen. They practice skills, work through real-world scenarios, and learn how to respond with safety, professionalism, and care.

This kind of training matters because transit drivers play an important role in keeping communities connected, especially across Nebraska.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and a special shoutout to Mitchell for continuing to bring energy, experience, and strong instruction to every class.

Attention Lincoln families! The Nebraska Safety Center will offer Summer Driver Education in July in Lincoln! This is one of the most affordable programs in the state, and classes will be held at Nebraska Innovation Campus, making it a convenient option for busy schedules. And, yes, students will have the opportunity to train in a brand-new vehicle this year.

This program is designed to help teens build confidence, learn safe driving habits and prepare for the road ahead with experienced instructors.

Our team is getting an early start this week.
Mitchell is in Omaha serving as a judge for the National Roadeo during the CTAA Expo. This event brings together transit professionals from across the nation to highlight excellence in driving, safety, and service.
We are proud to be part of this tradition and look forward to connecting with agencies from across the country throughout the week.
