University of Nebraska Kearney Department of Communication Disorders The Department offers both online and face-to-face graduate degrees. We welcome the opportunity to prepare young professionals in speech-language pathology.

The department offers the Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Communication Disorders and the Master of Science in Education degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The Master's program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the Americam Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The Department's

facilities in the College of Education include clinical treatment rooms which can be monitored by faculty/staff from their offices, complete auditory testing facilities, speech and hearing science laboratories, an assistive technology center, seminar and study rooms, and offices for faculty, staff, and graduate students. Our faculty members strive to guarantee students a top quality, innovatiave and relevant education experience. While excellent teaching is central to our mission, our faculty afford equal importance to clinical service and research. We believe that our instructional programs and facilities are outstanding. We want to send a big CONGRATULATIONS to Lucas Nelms for graduating from speech therapy! Lucas has been attending the UNK Speech-Language Hearing Clinic since the age of three. Throughout Lucas’s time here at the clinic, he has worked on several goals including articulation, language, and most recently Augmentative Alternative Communication (AAC). To encourage and generalize his use of his AAC device, for the past two years Lucas has been receiving speech therapy services in the community at activities he regularly attends. He has used his AAC device to communicate his ideas, connect with others, and participate in all of his activities! We also want to thank and recognize Lucas’s mom, Christina, for being such an amazing advocate for Lucas as well as for UNK and many services we provide at the UNK Speech-Language Hearing Clinic. We will miss you both!

Not only has he worked toward and met so many goals during his time at the UNK clinic, but he also touched the hearts of many of the clinicians who have worked with him throughout the years, including graduates Kenzie Hurlbert and Anna Richling.

Hurlbert states, “I am so proud of Lucas for graduating speech!! He brought the energy every Wednesday night at Youth Group and Buddy Bowling. It was such a great feeling watching him become more and more confident interacting with his peers each week! I sure miss those Lucas bear hugs!! Congratulations, Lucas!”

Richling writes, “I had the privilege of working with Lucas during my first year of graduate school, and it has been incredible to watch how much he has grown over the years! I am so excited and proud to hear that he has graduated from the Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic at UNK.

As a first-year clinician, working with AAC initially felt intimidating. Since Lucas was also a newer AAC user at the time, it quickly became a rewarding experience as we learned together. Watching his language and communication skills develop so rapidly was inspiring, and seeing his confidence grow was one of the most meaningful parts of my clinical experience!

I learned so much as a clinician while working with Lucas, and he played a significant role in my journey to becoming a speech-language pathologist. Now, as a practicing SLP in outpatient pediatrics, I still find myself reflecting on my time working alongside Lucas and many of my other clients from UNK. Those experiences continue to shape the way I approach therapy and serve as a reminder of why I chose this profession!”

Congratulations, Lucas, on your graduation from speech therapy! We are all so proud of your dedication and hard work towards meeting your goals and building connections.
