Dr. Opal Lee is an American educator and key activist who led the movement to make Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. She is often described as the "Grandmother of Juneteenth". In 2021, President Biden signed Senate Bill S. 475, making Juneteenth the eleventh federal holiday. Then, in 2024, Biden awarded Dr. Lee the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation's highest civilian honor. In observation of this federal holiday Juneteenth flags alongside Pan-African flags will be displayed around Cope Fountain on Wednesday, June 19th.

On Wednesday, June 19th, we invite you to individually complete a 2.5-mile walk around the University of Nebraska at Kearney to recognize the 2.5 years it took for the news and enforcement of freedom to reach enslaved people in Texas. Now a national holiday, Juneteenth celebrates the freedom gained when slavery was abolished all across the country. Dr. Opal Lee established this walk to educate the nation on the importance of understanding that freedom is for everyone.

As we celebrate graduation at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, we always remind parents that it is not only their child's dream coming true, but it the realization of their own hopes and dreams.

Graduation is special for all parents, but especially for immigrant parents who came to this country with nothing and gave their children everything.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who helped welcome Spanish-speaking families to UNK Graduation.

They also provided Spanish-language tech help and troubleshooting for familes who used the interpretation app to listen to graduation in their own language.

The Mary Jane and William R. Nester Student Leadership Award honors outstanding seniors who have excelled academically and demonstrated exemplary service, character and leadership during their UNK undergraduate careers.

This year's recipients are Melisa Becerra-Gonzalez, Ethan Ciancio, Emily Hall, Jacob Howe, Kenny Mitchell and Megan Wallman.

The True Meaning of Cinco de Mayo: “Mexican culture cannot be reduced to tacos, oversized sombreros and piñatas. Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) is not Mexico’s Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo is the day in 1862 when a small, largely outnumbered group of Mexican soldiers took on an invading French army at the Battle of Puebla—and won.”
