In a water emergency, every second counts.

If a child or swimmer is missing, check the water immediately. If someone is in trouble, call 911 right away and begin rescue efforts only if you can do so safely. If you're trained in CPR, begin CPR as soon as the person is out of the water and continue until emergency responders arrive.

Preparing ahead of time and knowing what to do can make a critical difference in an emergency.

Not all water is the same.

Swimming in a pool is different from swimming in a lake, river, or beach. Open water can have currents, sudden drop-offs, changing weather, and limited visibility that aren't found in most pools.

Before your family heads out, take a few minutes to talk about the unique risks of the environment and review basic water safety rules.

Every body of water deserves respect, and every outing starts with preparation.

Flotation devices can be a helpful layer of protection, but they should never replace active adult supervision.

Whether you're at the pool, lake, or beach, the most important safety measure is an attentive adult watching the water. Designate a Water Watcher whose only job is to supervise children, free from distractions like phones or conversations.

Every layer of protection matters, and active supervision is one of the most effective ways to help prevent drowning.

Many people think drowning is only a "summer problem."

Unfortunately, that's not true.

Water is everywhere.

Neighborhood pools stay open.
Weekend lake trips continue.
Hotel pools remain busy.
Bathtubs, ponds, and retention ponds are all around us.

Children don't stop being curious simply because school has started.

That's why water safety has to be a year-round conversation.

One lesson.
One fence.
One attentive adult.
One life jacket.

These layers work together to help prevent tragedy.
