The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Environmental Biology for Pacific Islanders Program supports the training of students from Pacific Island groups (CNMI, Guam, Palau, FSM, Marshall Islands, American Sāmoa, Hawai‘i) and Pacific Islanders of the diaspora to work in cutting-edge environmental biology to resolve real-world issues facing indigenous communities in Hawai‘i.
This summer REU has the incredible honor of partnering with the aloha ‘āina organization, Kauluakalana. This non-profit community-based organization is committed to natural resource restoration in Kailua, O‘ahu following culturally-informed protocols and integrating Hawaiian ways of knowing. Our REU interns will have the opportunity to get to know this ʻāina well, kilo the transformations of ʻāina over our 10 week program and work with their mentors to perform summer research using systems biology research to solve issues identified by the community of Kailua - including topics of fishery science, sustainable agriculture systems, indigenous health and nutrition, ecological restoration, invasive species science and management, and disease ecology. Students will also be trained in research ethics and responsible conduct, lab safety procedures, scientific writing and publication, and graduate school application procedures.
