40 years ago today, we lost our beloved Challenger crew. Today, we pause and remember Francis “Dick” Scobee, Michael Smith, Judith Resnik, Ellison Onizuka, Ronald McNair, Gregory Jarvis, and Christa McAuliffe.

In the past 40 years, we’ve stood as a living tribute to these seven brave crew members, continuing their mission to fuel curiosity and exploration. We’ve served over 7 million students since then, inspiring future generations with the Challenger crew’s story and resilience. The journey continues, and our collective efforts to inspire the future of STEM have never been more vital.

We intend to spend the next 40 years inspiring students to reach for the stars. ✨Let’s launch the next era—together.

Today, NASA is observing its annual Day of Remembrance on Thursday, January 22, honoring the members of the NASA family who lost their lives in the pursuit of exploration and discovery for the benefit of humanity. This event is traditionally held every year on the fourth Thursday of January, remembering the crews of Apollo 1 and the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.
Please take a moment in the next few days to remember the crews of Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia with your students and reflect on why we explore.

January 28, 2026 marks 40 years since the space shuttle Challenger STS-51L final flight. Seconds after launch on the morning of January 28, 1986, a booster engine failed and caused the shuttle Challenger to break apart, taking the lives of all seven crew members. President Ronald Reagan eulogized the crew, quoting from John Gillespie Magee's poem "High Flight": "We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for the journey and waved goodbye and 'slipped the surly bonds of Earth' to 'touch the face of God.'"
Please pause to remember these heroes and reflect on their contributions to human spaceflight.
