Join us in congratulating Labor Economist, Dr. Osman Keshawarz, and his co-author, Brian Callaci, on publishing their article, "Rent Controls Work - but They Aren't a Silver Bullet" in Jacobin Magazine. While there is no rent regulation in Hawaii, it is good to know the pros and cons involved in weighing the immediate social goals of affordability and tenant protection against potential long-term impacts on housing supply and investment, with the understanding that thoughtful policy design is the key to minimizing negative consequences. We are proud to have Dr. Keshawarz on staff at the Center for Labor Education & Research, and we support his dedication to working on finding solutions to issues that have implications for working people.

Rent controls can help to make housing more affordable in cities like New York. But they must be part of a broader solution to the housing crisis that involves increasing density and building more housing.

The Center for Labor Education and Research is honored to have welcomed our new Director Dion Dizon yesterday with coffee and an open house. We would like to thank all our friends on campus and off campus (University of Hawaii - West Oahu, ʻUluʻulu Moving Image Archive, , Unite Here! Local 5, Hawaii AFL-CIO, University of Hawaiʻi - West Oʻahu Library, and so many others not on social media) that attended or contributed!

As a UHWO alumna, Director Dizon earned a Bachelor of Arts with concentrations in Political Science and Anthropology, including a Senior Practicum at CLEAR. Afterwards she went on to earn her J.D. at the William S. Richardson School of Law at UH Mānoa. Her background includes extensive labor relations experience having served as a Business Representative for IBEW Local Union 1186, she has served as a union steward for OPEIU Local 277, and while in law school, she was the COPE Director for the Hawai‘i State AFL-CIO,
focusing on political education programs covering legislative priorities, candidate endorsements, and civic engagement. She is also a volunteer labor representative on the State of Hawaiʻi Workforce Development Council, where she is Vice-Chair of the Special Projects Committee and represents the Council Chair on the Native Hawaiian Education Council.

Drawing on her passion for educating workers, she aims to advance CLEAR's statutory function of providing labor education and services to workers, organizations, and the public. We here at CLEAR, welcome her and look forward to doing great work!

We would like to encourage all those planning on marching with us on May 1 to join the Hawaiʻi Workers Center, in partnership with the Defend and Respect Hawaiʻi's Workers Coalition, at their 5th Annual May Day/ International Workers' Day Celebration prior to the march. It is in these moments that we need to support one another the most!

Afterwards, we will gather at the Capitol and begin our silent march at 5:00PM. We hope to see you all there!

The third Friday of the month is rapidly approaching, which means it is time for Pride at Work Hawaiʻi's Monthly Pau Hana! Make sure to join them for an amazing opportunity to build solidarity and get to know Hawaiʻi's unionized workers. They will have FREE pūpū, fun people, and the opportunity talk about current issues facing our communities while in great company!

Don't forget the Hawaii AFL-CIO is hosting their Labor of Love-Workforce Development 2025 at Pahoa HIgh and Intermediate School on April 12, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (check-in: 7:30-8:00 a.m.)!

The goal of this community service project is to bring unions and the community together to offer campus improvements and workforce development opportunities to underprivileged students, their families, and the school. As the demand for workers continues to rise, this initiative creates valuable exposure for students, helping them discover opportunities that can lead to success. Through these efforts, we aim to support our keiki, create pathways to become skilled workers, strengthen our local communities, and build stronger connections between unions, business and organizations, and the broader public.
